New handloads for my 375 H&H

Sure,

CFE223, Hornady Brass, 3.6 LOA, Fed 215M primers. No pressure signs at all. This is out of my custom Eddy-Stone M1917, 24 in barrel. I'll push both bullet weights a bit and see where pressure signs show up, then do 3 shot groups lower to home in on a load the rifle likes. These were very tight groups even with the varying charge and velocity. That said, 10-15 rds off the bench with the 416 is a good day and I'm ready to retire!

that is with cfe223 I assume ?? care to share the details ??
@curt672
The beauty of CFE 223 is it fills a gap between Varget and H4350. I know it's a miniscule gap. It's a very versatile powder that can be used in a lot of cartridges from 17 REM to 458 and because of its different pressure curve can give higher velocities than standard powders. Top that off it's an easy to ignite ball powder and measurement is very accurate from a volumetric powder thrower.
Top that off CFE stands for copper fouling eliminator. This drastically reduces or eliminates copper fouling. I haven't cleaned my son's 398 in 400 rounds and it shows zero signs of copper fouling. It still gets cleaned for powder residue.
It is just one very versatile powder.
When you can safely get over 2,900fps out of the humble 308 with 150s it's not running that far behind the grand old 30-06 with 150s @3,0000fps it must be doing something right.

try 30 rounds in a row out of a 416 Wthby mag ----

No thank you lol. I’ve shot 30 out of my 375 off the bench. Not a big deal. Your 416 Weatherby ? Ouch. What’s your rifle weigh all in? My 416 REM is 10.5 scoped.

I am wanting a 378 Weatherby. Anyone with one near Phoenix want to let me try?

Mine weighs about the same -10.5 or so --- be careful what you ask for I hear the 378 is the most wicked kicking of them all
In the 1970's as a young teen, I had (ok my dad had) at TC contender in 44 mag with that silly octagonal paper-thin barrel and factory grips. I would load a 2 round box (remember those?) with loads side by side. 1 row was 180 gr sierra JHC with a light load of herco. The other row was a 240 gr Sierra JHC with a full charge of 296. I would take turns with friends taking shots from that pistol. Never seemed to bother me, but I remember my friends complained a lot! LOL

378 Weatherby will only kick bad when the throttle is pushed up!

@Azklmsr
You'll only fire a 378 ONCE.
While the recoil energy is noticeably the recoil velocity will slap you silly.
How do I know. I put five shots thru one and that was four to many.

I fired a .505 Barnes Supreme - once, standing. 600gr. Barnes FMJ and 125gr. IMR3031 was written on the box. The rifle weighed 9 pounds. The owned, a short, 250 pound Hungaryian chap from Vanvouver thought it was perfect. He fired 19 rounds off the bench & I fired the 20th. This was at the Barnet Rifle range in Burnaby, B.C. in 1976. I was shooting mr BRNO .375H&H that day, shooting tiny groups. The shot from that .505 spun me around like a weathercock and I ended up behind the yellow line on the range floor. I almost lost grip on the forend. Wasn't expecting that. I was 6'1" and 185pounds.
A 1/2 hour later, I went back to shooting groups and the .375 felt like my .308 match rifle of 10 pounds.

I took my wby 416 and set up my own loads to make it tolerable off the bench, both 400 gr and 350 gr at 2575 , recoil reduced and point of impact closer together , 400s dead on at 100 and 350s 2.5 high. the 400 txs devastated my bull.

I don't understand people who choose larger cartridges and then dumb them down to "Personally tolerable" levels. Just choose a lesser cartridge in the power range you can tolerate and shoot effectively. I don't know if it is an ego thing, so they can say the shot the big cartridge or what the driving force is???

I knew someone would pop up with this. the point is that you have options with the bigger gun, load it hot -- load it low , all with one gun. Buy a smaller one you are stuck at its max level that may not be where you want to go. My Wby as is has more power and speed than the best Rigby or any other .416 and I can do it all with one gun. That's my take on it, and to be honest I think your approach is outdated.

That is not what I am talking about... I am talking about people who by larger calibers and ALWAYS load them down... it does not make sense... loaded down they lose efficiency... far better to shoot a smaller caliber with full power loads. If you can't handle the big gun, don't use it... not speaking to you personally.

P.S - I do load and shoot downloaded ammunition for specific purposes. I am referring to those that cannot handle a certain power level, that insist on using cartridges designed for that output.

These are all toys. Buy the one you want shoot the loads you like. Does not bother me what makes another man (or woman) smile.

Safari this late spring I shot my 375 loaded hot and heavy for buff. 1and done. Loaded hot with lighter bullets (250 TTSX) for large plains game (4 for 4), and brought a delightful 243 for impala size game (3 for 3).

The 375 H&H loaded with ball powder (Superformance and CFE223) comes very close to 375 Weatherby standard levels. Works great for me. Some did not want to shoot it. Makes me smile though. I would like a bit more.

My desire for a 378 would likely be met with a 375 Weatherby with powders above. I’m looking to push 350 gr into the 2550 ish range for buff, and 270 TTSX into the 2850 range for eland, Roan, Giraffe. Both likely a lil lower than where you could load a 378. That said, that big case is cool!

All toys. All fun

So, at original velocities the .404 Jeff is like a “dumbed down” 416 Rigby with 400grn loads.

Do you mind me asking what auction you are referencing? I'm not in the market for any of those rifles...just curious.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is [redacted] in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
