I picked up a trade acquisition from my FFL this week and thought I would try the iron sights today. Barnes factory ammo. 50 yards standing. Maybe I should have quit at a 2 shot group. Pulled the 3rd. Flinched. What ever you call it.

The maker is unknown. Built on a 1959 model 70 action.

That's fine shooting too!

Never met an M70 that I didn't like, this one is no exception.
Very well put together and in .458 Wmag it's a winner.

Lots of happy hunting and shooting there. Well done.
Thanks for posting.

Maybe someone can glean something with more detailed pics.

Maybe you pulled the first two.

Yes sir. I picked that up on GI and it landed at the same time.
Dakota 76 .338 WM. If it shoots it will be going on a November elk hunt in Utah. If it doesn’t shoot to my liking. (Less than MOA) Look for it in the classifieds

There are $400 rifles that shoot MOA all day. No sense owning a good looking boat anchor

I tried mounting my scope on the Dakota and the rings it came with were junk and known quality brand and were not concentric or straight so I’m waiting on a set from talley. Sometimes this tool shows even Talley mounts need to be lapped.

This scope ring alignment tool is a blessing and a curse. A blessing in that it tells if the receiver was drilled incorrectly, the bases or the rings are not perfect.

The Wheeler pointer system will show that they’re straight, but this thing is so precise. It shows any bind on the tube.

Ignorance can be bliss and if I didn’t have this tool, I probably would’ve just slapped the scope in in the rings. Then potentially wondered why the scope didn’t track correctly or had a system failure down the road. Maybe all would have been well. But it would have gnawed at me.

Maybe I’ll shoot it at 50 with the irons today
