After a very long and drawn out wait, I have finally got my 400H&H back and out to the range.
I sent my action and a list of instructions, wants and desires with front sight and barrel band sling swivel to Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and waited, and waited, you get the idea patience is definitely not one of me greater virtues.
It was to be fitted with a 26 inch .411 Australian made Sprinter barrel and to be hand lapped.
Dimensions as per my bicentennial 375H&H.
It was finally finished after 20 months and a couple of false finishes requiring 2 return trips back to the Gunsmith via a courier services that are not cheap!!
Then cerrakote finish by a friend of mine in a very smart looking Matte charcoal sort of colour. I'm sure it's got a name, but I've forgotten.
I have a custom stock off my 375H&H on it at the moment, but its new stock is on the last stretch to being finished, photos to follow.
The first task was to find some reloading data, and the vast majority of which focussed on 400gr bullets, and very little else.
I had some Hornady 300gr spire points designed for the .405 Win, so I looked up info on them.
XXL RELOADING came to the party and I loaded up some rounds accordingly and then had to wait for 2 weeks because of bad weather limiting access to my bench on a friend's farm.
I went through the usual bore sight procedure and then, with a little trepidation, I finally got to fire my new beast. The 400H&H never leaves you in any doubt that the primer and powder worked properly!!!
It's any easy calibre to bore sight, because the hole down the tube is sooo big.
4 shots had me hitting where I wanted at 30yds, so then on to 100yds, 2 more shots had me hitting the target in a very fine minute of deer!
I then fired a 4 shot group all within the first 12 or so rounds fired in a new barrel. The group measured approximately .9 of an inch.
It was well worth the wait and mucking around over nearly 2 years, but couldn't be happier!
300gr bullets at 2740fps is fine with me, now for 400gr loads!
