Thought I'd share my latest project.

I bought an original Mauser Oberndorf Sporter Model B from a member who was across the country. Before buying it, I was told it was in decent shape. When it showed up... well, that wasn't exactly the case. The bore was pretty rough, it was chambered in 8x57J, the front sight was literally held in with a piece of tinfoil wedged under it, and there were a few other "surprises." I was pretty disappointed, especially considering what I'd paid. To make matters worse, the seller ghosted me afterwards.

That said, it was my first original Oberndorf sporter, and I just couldn't bring myself to part with it. After staring at it in the safe for a couple of months, I figured if it wasn't going to be an original collector piece, I might as well turn it into something I'd actually enjoy shooting.

I decided on the 10.75×68 (.423 Mauser). It's one of those classic cartridges that's mostly been forgotten, but I've always loved its history. Plus, who doesn't like a big-bore Mauser? I also already have a 404 Jeffery.

Getting everything together took a bit of digging. I sourced CH4D dies, Bertram brass, Woodleigh load data, and bullets came from my .404 Jeffery stash, along with a few 347-grain Woodleighs I'd been hanging onto.

There's still a bit left to do—mostly refinishing the stock—but I'm really happy with how it's coming together. The original factory peep sight is still there and pops off easily if I want to use the express sights. Up front I installed a now-discontinued NECG Holland & Holland-style front sight with the flip-up night bead, which I think suits the rifle perfectly.

I've only cycled dummy rounds so far, but the rifle feeds like an absolute dream.

Now comes the fun part: working up loads, getting it to the range, and finally taking this old Oberndorf back into the field where it belongs.

Just awesome. Had an original for several years with the 3/4 length stock. Finally traded it off after ammunition struggles. Great project and already looking great.

Thank you! An original would've been awesome but I was just too excited to match the original 404 Jeffery in a smaller package.

Beautiful , excellent to see the progress of your rifle ..upload photos as you make progress.

Very nice! I'd love to hear about the load development when you get started.
I had some very good luck with some imr 3031 and 400 gr hornaday dgx bullets. Im going to try a load with 347gr woodleighs that im hoping to use on black bear this September

I will. I wont do anything to it for a bit since bear season is coming upon me. Ill be posting soon about my 404 and 333 Jeffery builds!

Im getting everything together for my 318 Westley Richards build too

My 10.75 is modern gun with 25 inch barrel and nothing special. I am getting an average of just a little over 2400 FPS with the 325 grain CEB Raptor on top of H4895. Not a traditional bullet but I have a hunch that bullet is going to punch above its weight class.

Sorry you got screwed over in the original purchase but cheers to making lemonade out of a lemon. Like your choice of calibers!

I’m wondering if the 10.75, would also have been known as a 43 Mauser?
43 mauser is a different round. The 10.75x68 or .423 mauser us a smokeless load that uses the same bullets as the 404 Jeffery in a non magnum case.

This is gorgeous. I have been looking for a 43 mauser sporter for a while. I have dies, bullets and brass. Just looking for one that is a decent price
I have 2x Mauser 1871/84 available n the USA..f you are able to buy one of them just let me know, these rifles are in a beautiful condition...I wanted to permanently export it to me in South Africa..unfortunately it will be too expensive to permanently export it from the USA to my country ..It is being kept at a friend of mine in the USA ...Let me know if I can be of any assistance.
