500’s revisited

For a couple of seasons I hunted with a beautiful V.C Roundbody double in .500 N.E.
A stunning rifle that shot incredibly well and I managed to pull off some spectacular shots with it.
It really left an impression on buffalo.
Unfortunately for me I just couldn't come to terms with carrying that much weight around every day, a situation that was compounded when trophy capes and heads had to be recovered far from anywhere a vehicle could reach. In the end I sold it to someone who would appreciate it more than me.

For the last 5 years of my guiding career, and right up to current day, I hunt buffalo with a M70 chambered in .500mdm, the brainchild of our own forum member Michael458.
It's not .505 nor .510 but a true .50cal, necked up on the .375RUM case.
I've used this combo on many buffalo, and other bovines, in varying situations and it's absolutely stunning in performance.
Packaged in a relatively light, just over 8lbs, and short platform it's a pleasure to carry all day and performs like a champion in the heat of battle.

One day, after witnessing me sort out a couple of problem bulls that were giving the local community some issues, my Elder Traditional Owner, referencing my rifle, said "him make-em sit down real quick, Eh".

I have had the privileged opportunity to see and hold that M70, and I can attest it is an absolutely stunning rifle...

I had a .505 that cycled smoothly. No hiccups. And was very accurate.

CEB solids and Northfork solids. Target is 50 yards.

Mature tuskless shot on left side for the heart. Bullet took out the right front leg and dropped her where she stood. Insurance frontal Chest shot

Truck is where she stood. Picture taken from my shooting location in a creek.

I have owned a 505 (same one that @Altitude sickness owned) it cycled and shot great.

Owned 2 500 Jeff’s. One was a sterling Davenport that was just a fantastic rifle and did what you expected out of a premium DG rifle. The second was a cz 550, it fed so so and really needed to be tuned up but I sent it down the road to someone that really wanted it. I backed a buddy up on an elephant and in his video you can tell where his 416 and the 500 hit. A much different reaction.

If I was in the market I would get a 500NE double as first choice and a 500 Jeff as my second choice.

You got it the wrong way round . 500j jams often . I have experienced big jams with a very expensive 500j as did the very famous gun writer owner who was trying to sell it to me . No problems getting bullets ( Woodleigh) or brass ( Norma and Bertram ) . No fillers required if using AR 2213sc powder . And of course Norma make PH ammo with 600grain pills . Whatever the 500J does the 505 does better . I have to 505s a custom with a Dumoulin action and one with a double square bridge GMA action . Love them .
I hear that the R8 in 500j has no loading issues because the rounds sit vertically above each other. My very limited experience showed no problems, but of course there are only two cartridges in the magazine and one in the chamber.

Out of curiosity, does anyone…. Anyone at all, have or know of where/how to obtain any 505 Gibbs brass. Specifically Norma or Jamison?

The 500 J in the R8 is a real machine. I’ve posted the below link before…. Apologies for that. But, I’m really impressed with the R8.

My comments regarding jamming was specific to Mauser ( and copy actions) . I can’t comment on R8 style actions .

No Norma or Jamison, but Desert Tech Munitions has Bertram on the way. Might be a month before they are in stock.

Same as one of my two 505Gs . GMA action and 24 inch Krieger barrel . Weighs about 11.5 pounds . All put together by Bob De Vries in Melbourne . Bob also made another 505G on a Dumoulin single square bridge action with massive 25 inch barrel . I’ve had it a long time . It is a beast on water buff . Weighs nearly 12 pounds . It loves Norma PH ammo with 600 grain pills . I am in Australia so not so much trouble getting components for reloads .

I've had both 505 Gibbs and 500 Jeffery on GMA actions. Ended up using the 500J for a couple years as I had a lot of components for it and brass was readily available. The 500's kill stuff for sure, and the GMA action in the respective lengths were made for these calibers. Weight of rifle and fit are really important, recoil is immense. If I were to have another 500J I would want it to weight 11.25-12 lbs. I've since stepped away from the 50's and found my comfort zone with a 404 and 416, I just couldn't practice much with the 50's anymore, but by practice I mean a rifle gets 100's of rounds through it in prep for safari, that is hard to do with a 50 and not ultimately hurt yourself. I like to travel with 1 rifle and use it on everything. If a guy is proficient with a big bore and comfortable not practicing a lot and end up putting it where it needs to go when the shot presents itself,.....you will enjoy using one.
