Remington 700 as a safari rifle anyone?

I wish there were more aftermarket options available. I don’t like any of the Winchester factory stocks. I don’t mind the short action B&C, but the forend of the long action vs is unnecessarily long. The McMillan edge is great for featherweights, but balance sucks with longer barrels. Bansners can bit hit or miss these days.

In your defence we are further apart. I was Army Reserve, never in a combat area. Conditions in your photo I have not lived in, but when pushed through Canungra (Our Jungle Warfare Training Area) we were pushed hard, rightfully so, and crawled through conditions like that, also on various exercises. In no way am I comparing my time as equal your time in the service, and I dips me lid to you(y). However I have put various weapons through those sorts of conditions and with standard cleaning none failed including some without the cleaning, namely our F1 submachine gun, and the SLR L1A1(Derivative of the FN). Still would not like to rely on non-maintained arms in a combat situation.

As you say most are not as temperamental as some make out, mostly. I will say the SR25 is, but boy they shoot.

I found at times some problems were because people over oiled their rifles and didn't wipe it off.

I have a Rem 700, one of several, in 375H&H and need to get a M16 extractor put on, only because it is one produced in the 90's. The first 700 I bought about 1977, on its second barrel and the extractor is still going strong.

Re the stuffed safety of the 700's. I replaced all my 700 triggers with aftermarket triggers and their safety's.

Gomer have you looked at any of the wooden stocks, or Houge's?

so….if the model 700 extractor is replaced, and the trigger is replaced or modified and it’s a pre ‘80’s manufactured rifle she’s a good DG rifle?

Yeah….nah.

But, many years ago I killed heaps of stuff with Remington 700’s. Only had one extractor fail…..

I still have a soft spot for the 700 …but my only example now lies in the back of the safe.

We had those issues in iraq. Put on too much oil the flour like dust sticks to it. I ended up drying out baby wipe tubs then putting motor oil on them as a wipe. Worked alot better than the clp.

Ive always wanted to fly fish down under. On the combungra river

That padded camo sling is pure '70s nostalgia right there. Had one on my Marlin 30-30 as a kid; STILL have it on that rifle and will never put anything else on it.

Speaking of Marlin lever actions such as the 1895, it's extraction & ejection is really similar to the Mauser design; the ejector is no different while the extractor is a smaller, spring-over version of "the claw". It would be just as good or better than an M16 conversion on a 700 I think.

No ticker I say. Hell yeah I would take one of those in 375 H&H or 416Remm after an El, or lion. But then I my brain is 20 going 21 :LOL:

I try and stay away from those areas in the Victorian High Country now, spent quite a few wet and freezing in my miss spent youth there. To try and cheer us the RSM would say " What's your problem, people spend thousands a year to come here and do this". The answer back to him was usually " Yeah, but they can have a fire....Sir":LOL:

As for fishing, I have developed a new method. I but the larges, heavies most streamlined sinker I can and just cast it. I'll eventually scone a fish and knock it out. I'll catch more that way then I do any other way.:LOL:

When i was younger and kesrbing to fly fish as a kid there was an aussie tv show a river somewhere. Looked like alot of fun.
 
I've also wanted to fly fish there. My next door neighbor is retired Australian Navy and still has a place in the snowy mountains.
