404 Jeffery, my new sweetheart

I know @Mark458 is new here, but I'd like to let everyone know I recently purchased a rifle from him, gun arrived in great condition, gun was as advertised, Mark is a stand up guy, I would definitely do business with him again!!

Sounds like you need to put your 404 to work on a buffalo as well. When are you going back to get that done?

I'm going back again this summer for my fifth safari. I have two very respectable buffalo on the walls now. Problem is my house is very small and already filled with trophies (all but one are skulls or cap mounts). Culling a buffalo may be on the menu again. Depends on the price and availability.

FYI The springbuck on the right was a cull. Helluva shot in the head. Taxidermist fixed it up because I didn't leave instructions to leave it as is.
 
I have definitely seen a resurgence in the 404s popularity over the last few years. Surely some of these ammo companies other than Hornady will jump on board with some factory options.

Build it and they will come.

I appreciate that Andrew. I try to treat everyone the way I want to be treated. Hope your rifle performs as good as mine did.

And thanks for getting me to join here. I always checked in from time to time but I enjoy interacting with all the members.

That mount looks great. I'm looking forward to having mine done like that. I'm limited on wall space as well. A lot of my animals are down at my office. Plenty of room there. If my son ever decides to move out I might get my man cave /basement to put more of my mounts in. Still trying to sell my wife on the double buffalo pedestal mount in the house. I might need to try a different strategy. Haha

You're new so I'll give you a tip on posting pictures. When you select "Attach files" and pick your image, the program takes you back to your post. Put the cursor where you want the image to appear in the text. Keyboard will pop up again. Get rid of keyboard and you see the thumbnail at bottom of post window prompting "insert." Select insert and two options appear "Thumbnail" or "Full image." Select "Full image"! Trying to upload thumbnails so I can view them is a pain in the butt, especially if the post has several thumbnails. Takes forever for them to load. I often give up and don't bother.

This gun is clearly flawed and needs massive work. I'll be happy to purchase and spend the money to get it to shoot well!

@Hornedfrogbbq, my first 404 Jeffery was made by CZ in 2008. I bought it from AH(er) Lon Denny a PH from Zim. now deceased.) The second one was purchased from frog stealer (an AH member) who had a Winchester Mod. 70 converted by Randy Selby, using a McGowen Precision barrel. The load was developed by a well-respected shooter from New Zealand.

I'm torn between two heavy game cartridges- the 404J and the 470NE. Fortunately they are in two completely different rifles so which one get used is a matter of situation. The 404s are on M70s with scopes while the 470 is a Rigby double open sights.

Welcome to the club. Magnificent group sell the 458! I can vouch for its effectiveness on Territory Water Buff and scrub bulls using Woodleighs. My custom 98 by Bob De Vries at Kudu services shot a clover leaf at 100 at my starting load with 400 Woodleighs over 75g of ADI 2208 for 2235fps. 79g of same powder gave an inch group at 2370. Cheers
 
I don't own a lead sled or such apparatus. Would be interesting to see what group my 404 could produce with one of those. It literally put bullets into the same hole at fifty yards on the bench. After the second shot my grandson said "You missed the target, Papa." Well, that's not possible at fifty yards! "Look closely, Parker. The hole is stretched a bit to one side." The third round just made the hole twice as big. Three shots off the bench was rolling the dice with my retinas so I stopped there. After that I went to 100 yards standing with support. I only have 1-4x scope but still got a good group of five shots. Not cloverleaf but good enough.

Are those loads for 400J or 458?
 
This is the load detail form 98 in 404. Projectile was a Woodleigh RNSN, primer CCI LRM 250.
Starting at 75g of ADI2208. I shot Too many rounds off the bench. Caused a retina problem in my left eye.I made a mistake with the 79g load, it was 1.5 inches at 100, which would have been pleasing enough without the better 75 load

So you're saying you switched to lead sled after the retina issue? How did that turn out? Did it get caught in time for laser mend or did you have full blown detachment and surgery? I may be the only person in Canada whose had three retina detachment surgeries in the same eye and still seeing with it. Vision is not great but it does give me depth perception. Both eyes have also had numerous laser patch jobs but nothing for the last fifteen years. Doc says I'm good to shoot again but the 404 is shot only enough to get it zeroed. Lead sled would make a lot of sense. I now shoot a lot of skeet and clays but with a heavy old 12 gauge magnum semi A5 with 31" barrel to reduce recoil.
 
You all have to be kidding me. You detached retinas or damaged yhem from shooting? How is that possible with any kind of proper form? I mean I could see bad things happening shooting a 7.5lb .458 or something but a proper gun weight and form I would think would make injury quite difficult?
