Cost of Full Bag 32-Day Safari in Kenya & Tanzania, 1970

I was going through some old records of my Grandfather's and found this run-down of the all-in costs of his 32 day safari in 1970. He took something like 35 animals, including lion, elephant, black rhino, buffalo, lesser kudu and on and on. What was then Ker, Downey and Selby were the outfitters, so it was as high-end as it got. He spent $8,930 all in, including air fare, taxidermy etc. A quick on-line conversion puts the all-in costs in today's dollars at about $65,000.View attachment 718955
Is that for 1, or for 2 people?

Rift Valley, Kenya, 1974. My white hunter was a Mr. Jospeh Cheffings.

Ironically Mr. Cheffings had incredible foresight for a white hunter. He predicted that hunting would soon be banned in Kenya, because hunting was already banned in India in 1972. And there was a huge population of Indians in Kenya, who all publicly condemned hunting. I didn’t take his prediction very seriously at the time, but in 1977… his prophecy unfortunately came true.

Ugalla Game Reserve, Tanzania, 1978 (right when TAWICO/Tanzania Wildlife Corporation re-opened hunting in Tanzania after the 1973 ban but only in Ugalla Game Reserve & Fort Ikorongo & Madaba/U3 and your white hunter could not be Caucasian).

Luke Samaras & Eric Pasinisi were the first two Caucasian white hunters whom TAWICO permitted to open professional hunting outfits there in 1980. Later, Robin Hurt opened up shop there in 1983.

I'll bet you are glad you went when you did! I was young during those years, but if only I had made the sacrifice to go back then! What could I have afforded that is out of reach today.

I think a new Chevy was roughly $5000 at the time? When the oil embargo raised gas prices and little cars were the new "thing" you could get a Chrysler New Yorker new for $5000 because no one wanted a "gas guzzler'---did anyone think about how much gas you could buy with the difference? And look at that daily rate!

I'll cut a check tomorrow for $200K for a 32-day hunt in TZ for all of the game that was shot. I was quoted over $125K for ONE lion and a couple of buffalo for bait a few years ago and that did not include freight or taxidermy, just fees and daily rates.
Let’s not miss @Tanks excellent point which is if people only knew the real value they were getting then that is so very hard to find today for good reasons we all who love Africa would have jumped on it!

I met Larry Kelly owner of Mag-na-Port back in 1972 we became good life long friends he would tell me if you want to go to Africa do it ASAP because its never going to be cheeper and the animals will never be as plentiful. He said refinace the house don't drive that new car get the money to go. Get a second job if needed but do it now it will never be any cheeper. You will never regret going.

Well I didn't take Larry's free advice back then.

Found a bunch of slides from my Dad & Granddad's 1970 trip. This is a photo of a slide on my wall so the quality isn't great but pretty sweet FJ55 Landcruiser...

What name is written above KDS?
I can't make it out in the photo.
It was usually the name of the PH.
And a half animal ist hanging there left.

Amazing post, amazing information!

I like to price things from different eras in gold.

This hunt in '71, at the stated price of gold back then, equals 255oz. (Gold was not legal to buy in the US in '71, Ford made it legal again on 12/31/74).

255oz of gold today is $1,148,000.

Yeah I'm not sure what the story is with the half dead animal. Maybe this wasn't Nairobi? But the placement in the slide show would indicate that it was.

Robin Hurt was their PH.

Could the thing that looks like a half animal actually be a cooling bag. In the old days water was put in bags along with drinks, hung outside the car to help keep the drinks cool.

Between condensation and dust the bags would be covered in mud by the end of the day and need to be washed. It would keep drinks significant cooler than ambient temperature.

Examples.

I can imagine what a 30 day full bag Hunt in Tanzania would be in current dollars

That was my first impression

Amazing posts... just fantastic seeing the KDS stuff. I have some of that old stationery as well. It makes all of our email comms these days seem so plain and devoid of character...and style.

Think of all the letters that went back and forth over months to get the details of a safari worked out.

I remember the old airmail stationary that folded up to make an envelope with a preprinted stamp to keep the weight down. Tanzanias was different but something like this example.

It was a big deal to get an airmail letter. We would normally go to town once a week. The post office was always part of the trip. I can still remember the old P.O Box number.

Habib

I was rereading this and noticed you mentioned TAWICO. Did Hassan Mulla own TAWICO in 1978 or was it still a government parastatal?

Thanks.

Hello,
I might be able to help you out depending on how many you need. I could probably spare 50-75 .285g A-Frames. They are factory pulls that look like new. Let me know if you are still looking,
Thanks,
Gary
