Very Excellent, I did not know what the 458 JCE was, but looked it up and see you were here talking about it a couple of years ago...... I see where you tried to get a 458 B&M SS reamer but could not get it in Australia, so you did your own. Excellent, very unique and fun cartridge and capable of much bigger things than most would consider with only a casual look. Especially using Gen I and II bullets.

We should start a 458 JCE and 458 Super Short thread and compare notes..... I love mine, recently set it up so I could see with my left eye and shoot again.

Well done.
Michael
You start the thread and I'll chime in!

I took my first Sambar with the "Juicer" in 2023 shooting 270gr Atomic29 bullets at 2600fps with a full case of Hodgden Li'l Gun (48gr). These produce a 1 1/2" group at 200 yards.
I assume you are using a WSM case as well, around 1.65 inches........ I run the 250 Socom Raptor from CEB at 2640 fps in my 16 inch guns at 55000 PSI, also using LilGun 53/Lilgun.

Yes, would be fun....... But unfortunately it is going to be first of the week or so before I can do so. I am headed out in a few minutes on a mission to Washington Dulles airport, no I am not on vacation, on a mission to retrieve rifles. Another Story all to its own. But yes, I think it would be fun to compare notes on the incredible little big bores............. Thanks
Michael

Excellent! But no rush - in 2 weeks my son and I fly to New Zealand south island to hunt Chamois, Himalayan Tahr and Red Deer. I'll be back at the beginning of May.

Yes, cut a WSM case (any calibre) off at the shoulder, through the custom CH4D FLS die and trim to length. It's a fun little cartridge that punches way above its weight.

Nice rifle! Have you taken Sambar with it? Water Buffalo?

Hey, thanks!

No, not yet... hoping to take a nice Sambar with it this year and hoping for a Water Buffalo hunt mid next year.

The only animal I have taken with it was a little Fallow I got while out with my young son.

It worked!

Nice! Look forward to your report. I didn’t realize how large sambar could get and a Water Buffalo hunt will be epic!

Yeah, Sambar get pretty big... They're kind of our Elk - not quite as big, but similar.
Whenever I recommend a Sambar rifle to someone, I tell them to look at the rifles that are recommended for Elk. (y)

I have probably taken more Sambar with a .458WM than any other cartridge, and sure, it is a bit big but not totally out of place.
This is not only because Sambar are tough but also because of the rough, rugged environment they live in.
It becomes difficult to track a wounded animal over this really tough terrain, so it's always nice when they drop pretty quickly. (y)

All my rifles are Model 70’s with Brown Precision fiberglass stocks. All are custom builds around those actions.

.338 Win Mag. My Leopard and nearly everything else rifle. It’s a post-64, the only non pre-64 I have. Topped with a Leupold VX5 in 2-10 with Firedot. I’d happily use it on a lion and still want to shoot a Buffalo with it.

.375 H&H. Built around a pre-64 action. Leupold VX5 in 2-10 with Firedot.

.416 Hoffman. Another pre-64 action build. Leupold VX5 in 1-5 with Firedot.

I’d like to get a double in 470 NE. But the 3 above cover the full gamut nicely for my needs.

Some amazing guns in this thread. I’m a newbie Africa hunter, I’ve done two hunts the last two years and my third coming up later this year where I’ll pursue my first DG, Buffalo of course. I thought when I got my Ruger RSM 375 H&H with a Leupold VX6 2-12 Firedot that I was set for Buffalo. And I love this gun and have used it for Eland, Kudu, Sable and more. Then this guy
I did. Lasted about 3 weeks. After I did some work to it another AH member needed a Buff gun for upcoming trip so sold it to him.
..with an accomplice in @Houston Bill, tells me about a 416 REM Mag that he’s glass bedded, upgraded the trigger, and added a mercury recoil reducer to the Winchester Model 70 with Leupold VX5 2-10 Firedot. So I decided who doesn’t want an extra 100 grains when going after the nasty dispositioned buffalo?

I just shot it for only the 3rd time today and it’s an accurate son of a gun, 6 of the 9 shots were touching and only the first cold barrel and two shots after scope adjustments were not.

As @mdwest says, enablers! Even @Bob Nelson 35Whelen pitched in while on his world tour when I first saw the gun at R&M asking me “what the….are you waiting for” in his Aussie accent. Maybe a curse word tossed in for good measure.

@Katy Darren
I think I was there when you were looking at it and told you you really needed it.
. there were no cuss words thrown in but I'm glad you got it. I was a fine looking rifle glad to hear it shoots as well as it looks.
Now go have fun and enjoy life.
If'n @ Mak Bigger staff has anymore of that fine Bundy rum have yourself a good slugg of it and a Vegemite sandwich and give yourself a pat on the back for making the right choice.

As much as the .416 Rigby is a delight to hunt with, for my mid year buffalo expedition here, I think the .500 Jeffery will get a run, complimented by the .400 Jeffery as the 'light rifle', making it an all Jeffery cartridge affair.

And I’m, maybe naively, optimistic that the long awaited .333 Jeffery will accompany @458JCE and I on our upcoming Chital and Fallow outing.

Nice! Why did I not know you had a Jeffery 450-400 3"?

Not as cool or old as yours, but was previously owned by Mick @264 so certainly boasts some solid provenance!

I've not taken anything with them but I have a Ruger No1 in 458WM and a Browning X-Bolt in 375HH. My next African hunt will be for buffalo. Trying to figure out whether to bring either or, or both of them.

Most people know that I have strong feelings about the 375, all bad.

That No.1 with premium .458 bullets would be my first and only choice between the two. It will usually drop cape buffalo with one shot. while a .375 will usually not. That No. is a a few inches shorter over all that the bolt rifle.

I think that the X-Bolt is an excellent rifle. It's the cartridge that I have come to dislike for cape buffalo, the hard way.

I will be looking for a set of these when my .505 is done... sadly not cashed up right now for these. :(
Need anything in trade?
Cheers,

what kind of velocity does the 140 grains list, curious how they would fit in with my current 130 gr, supply of 270s. maybe a pic of the box data listing vel. and drop. Oh and complements on that ammo belt, nice.
