Custom Safeties For Ruger #1

Direct fit

Was advised today by my gunsmith of 5 week backlog so it will be a while before I can post a photo of the custom safety I mentioned at the top of this thread.

5 weeks to do what? Just to install an after market safety?

That and a Jard trigger. Had I known I would have done it myself. I’m sure I could overcome any difficulties in 5-6 weeks!

My gunsmith routinely has a 6-8 week backlog. If you think that’s bad, try making a non-emergency dental appointment. They’ll see you in the Fall!

After reading multiple posts about Trop safeties and having experienced the frustrating bounce back into chamber of an empty 300 H&H cartridge due to hitting the front of the factory safety, I contacted Trop Gun Shop in Pennsylania who referred me to Greg Krick at Krick Composites also in Pennsylvania in the Lancaster area. He has these safeties for sale. I will post a photo of mine as soon as it returns from the smith who is also installing a Jard trigger for me.

The trop is pretty good, I suspect Krick is probably making them for Trop. The trop was designed so that the rim on Nitro sized calibers didn't get stuck on ejection, dangerously slowing reloads.

Custom #1s typically do it a better way. I quick trip through the mill makes a recess where the safety operates, then a safety is milled to operate inside that trough. The #1 custom safety should be shaped like a shark fin so it allows ejected brass to clear it or launch off of it away from the chamber. The back side of the safety should be textured so your thumb can operate it easily.

The factory safety is investment cast trash that rattles around and is pretty crude. About as much as one can expect from a $2000ish mass produced rifle of good quality.

Show a competent gunsmith a photo of a Dakota Model 10 safety and ask them to make you something like that on your Ruger #1 and you'll be very pleased. Not a crazy hard job.

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
Here we are, the last day of the show in Denver, it's been a good show but expecting a quiet day today. I will be back for-sure to do this show next year and maybe also do the one in Sacramento California.

On Monday I will be hitting the road driving from Denver and eventually make it down to Atlanta for the flight home.

its going to be a good year!

Hi Rem280, Saw your post on getting selected for Idaho Elk. Do you have a zone(s) selected? I live in N Idaho, might be able to offer some ideas.

Cheers,

Craig
