9.3 X62 brass and bullet powder recommendation

I will simplify things for you. LOL

9.3x62mm load data at 64k psi, 250 gr Nosler AB bullet

Relodr 17 powder, max charge at 68.3 grains, with muzzle velocity of 2757 feet per second.

9.3x62mm load data at 64k psi, 286 gr Nosler PT bullet

Relodr 17 powder, max charge at 66.2 grains, with muzzle velocity of 2590 feet per second.

Now, with H414 load data, max charge of 68.2 grains, and same 250 grain AB bullet, gets 2704 feet per second.

Using H414 load data, max charge of 66.0 grains, and the same 286 grain bullet, gets 2544 feet per second.

Oh, don’t you worry Bob, I have thick enough skin to withstand an argument.

But me thinkest I have yet to begin to ruffle the .375 H&H Mag pundits feathers.

Also, I’m not trying to use one set of data to say that the 9.3 is better, just equal.

Here’s a little excerpt from a Bob Mitchell in Canada.

What the .375 H&H will do with a 300gr, the 9.3 x 62 will do from a 286gr, and both have the same SD. But the heavier you go the closer they get!

A 300gr from the 9.3 x 62 in a 22.5″ modern rifle will do 2550 fps/ 4331 ft-lbs at 64,000 PSI. From a 320gr it will make 2460 fps/ 4300 ft-lbs at the muzzle. A 286gr NP from mine (22.4″ barrel) makes 2630 fps/4392 ft-lbs quite easily. RL-17 is used in all those loads.

One can load the 9.3 to 64k psi, if wanted. The only limiting factor in doing so is felt recoil. One can always choose to stay at the normal factory psi, or go up to 60k or 62k psi. The 9.3 can be a different animal if you so decide. The ultimate decision is always up to the person who is hand loading it. You can’t go wrong with any of these options.

I am a simple, simple man. When I look at a 9.3x62 cartridge next to a .375H&H cartridge I say to myself "That .375 is bigger." More powder, more bullet similar(-ish) case design. Y'all can load a 9.3 to the nuts but I can't help but think if someone wanted to load a .375 to the nuts it would be more of everything than the 9.3.

Don't get me wrong, I love them both. I just don't think a comparison is apples to apples.

You’re quite right about that. The .375 H&H is more of everything than a 9.3x62, definitely.
The author of this thread wanted hand loading options for the 9.3x62. I was just trying to show how far up they could go with it, and not bring in the .375 H&H debate.

Today I use whatever brass I can get and sometimes have to do without..Ive had good luck with Privi Partisan and its cheap by comparison and usually available..My go to powder is RL-17 and CFE223, I shoot mostly 250 and 286 gr. bullets, The 286Nosler partition and 250 Barnes rate high with me on DG as do Woodleigh, North fork,.. The 9,3x62 is kind to bullets and easy to load for..

One thing I'm sure of and that's no one can tell the difference in the effect of the 9,3x62 and the 375s on heavy animals or PG for that matter..Balistic hogwash otherwise..The 9.3x62 , the 7x57 and the 8x57 are very under loaded in the USA is common knowledge.

How many grns are you using for 286 Nosler and 250 Barnes?

I’m thinking that it isn’t optimal for a case larger than the .45-70 or .444 Marlin. RL-17 works the best in the 9.3x62 with heavier bullets. I’m not sure about CFE 223. It works really well in the ‘06 case and turns the .35 Whelen into a different animal altogether when loaded to the gills.

Think I see some guys using cfe223 in the 9.3, believe leverevolution is pretty close to cfe223. I'm not ready to try it yet but will once I get my 9.3 together. The leverevolution is supposed to be good in the 6mmarc I have but still need to pick up some dies for that, have 2 pounds of leverevolution at least. Really wish I had the money for more powders but I buy what I can when I can, then there's the forgetting what's best for each cartridge. I keep saying I need to make a good list of what are the few top powders for each cartridge and for different weight bullets.

I think they are a bit underrated, in a test done by NF they were pretty comparable to the NF Spitzers in terms of penetration. wound channel and weight retention. So you get everything like a NF at perhaps 1/3rd the price.
 
Oh they work fine. At average velocities under 2550fps. Which is what they are designed for. If you horse them to fast they tend to start shedding jackets. Just my experience and observations. They are pretty good bullets. I do wish that Hornady would build a bonded 286 gr bullet.

Good day. My recommendations are first either 250 or 286grn A-Frames (if you get a chance at a Eland) or the Norma Oryx in the same weights. Barnes are great if you can't find the others. I use W760 for the 286's and Varget for the 250's. All shoot very tight groups. Enjoy.

Almost forgot. I use Lapua and Norma brass with excellent results.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
