I was a bit fearful regarding this gun in the beginning. I still don’t know the real story but I feel a lot better knowing you bought it from Kirby Hoyt. He’s known legitimate and has the gauges to accurately measure what he sells. By reputation, I don’t believe you have a safety concern.

I still question whether it is a live pigeon gun rather than a higher grade fowling gun, but it seems good either way and the LOP is fantastic.

Did he publish the minimum wall diameter, choke, and chamber specs in the original ad?

I’m trying to sort through what proof marks indicate versus what Kirby said it is versus what you may perceive it to be. (Any of the 3 could be true, or all 3)

I’m also trying to figure out what’s not so good about it because it seems like you paid considerably less than it’s worth. Things that injure value to some extent would be the weight, if it’s out of proof, or if it’s stocked with a comb for pigeon shooting where it’s oriented really for rising shots. Only being out of proof is really a major detriment if it shoots well and it fits you.

if it really is proofed nitro for 1-1/4 ounce and it has longer chambers, coupled with its weight, it would be a great gun for sporting clays and long pokes at roosters.

He did not publish any additional info. I think I got it for a rather reasonable price. There is some wear on the finish towards the muzzle. Otherwise I’m personally impressed.

It fits me reasonably well. It fits as well as any off
The rack gun would fit. In an ideal world I’d have a little more drop at the heel.

I think it will be a fine gun to shoot with the right ammo once I confirm chambers.

Looks beautiful, congrat !

My old W.C. Scott 10 gauge. It’s off to Andy Hawk in Anchorage in the next couple days to start the restoration process

If anyone knows of a company that does browning, please let me know. As you can see, this old gun was browned vs blued

That's a very nice older Brit waterfowl gun. Proofed for 2-3/4 inch, 1-1/4 ounce loads. It is not a 'pigeon gun', which usually had no safety at all.

If it were mine I would shoot nothing more than 1-1/4 oz standard velocity bismuth loads for waterfowl and STANDARD VELOCITY 1-1/4 ounce lead loads of 6s for pheasants. Most people seem to believe that pheasants are armor plated, but I kill them neatly out to 40 yards with 1 ounce of 6s or 7s from my open choked 16 gauge bird guns.

That's a beautiful, classic Brit gun which will kill pheasant for you - but don't shot over-loaded cartridges in it and take good care of it.

I have had great luck in restoring and properly finishing Damascus barreled shotguns with Pete Mazur (Mazur Restoration, Grass Valley, CA). Meticulous work and he will find everything that must be repaired with any gun he accepts for work. He has done much work on both shotguns and rifles for me over the years and I trust him completely.

Rookhawk - I do not share your confidence in Kirby Hoyt.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.

Hi EGS

I read your thread with interest. Would you mind sending me that PDF? May I put it on my website?
