Hi folks,

I was wondering if anyone knew of any references to hand guns being taken on Safari or Shikar?

There are references to Howah pistols of course in India

I know Harry Selby had a Colt Woodsman (https://www.americanrifleman.org/content/a-very-special-colt-woodsman/)

Has anyone in reading books of tales of old come across taking hand guns on Safari?

If so, please post what the gun was and the reference.

Best wishes and thanks in Advance,

Scrummy

I always keep my Webley .32 ACP Model 1908 on my person, even when I hunted my three problem Royal Bengal tigers. Of course, I’m no celebrity hunter.

I used it (so far) to shoot a Russell's Viper, a jackal, a green dove and for anti-personal use during forest duty.

Very interesting to read this, this was for self protection from 4-legged or 2-legged predators?

I must admit though, that this pistol, in contrast with other W&S firearms, is not going to win any beauty contests :)
I don't think any of my firearms will win any beauty contests, sadly. Mangrove forest duty used to be hell for good looking firearms.

This was for anti poaching, anti heroin smuggling and anti pirate patrol.

I know Bell had a Mauser automatic and a 22 pistol at one time. I don’t recall the book being any more specific than that.

I think quite a few Brits went for Mausers (I believe Churchill is known to have had a Broomhandle C96)

I used to use that exact model for humane destruction of farm animals. It was slightly modified as this picture shows

Maybe to expand on the OP’s request for info, what would be a contemporary classy version of handgun for safari/shikar?
