What’s everyone’s opinion of this rifle?

I have no idea! The action is a 1909 Argentine Mauser, so the action is solid. The wood looks good too.

Would consider it if someone could verify with workmanship of the rifle builder.

I don’t like the 26 inch barrel though..

I think it’s from here (based on a 30s internet search):

It’s probably a “hey could you put a 404 barrel on this and make it work?” kinda gun. Although the stock is really nice, but it may have been on the gun from a prior caliber :E Shrug:

Agreed. My last 404 was one of those “custom” rifles and it did not meet expectations at all.

You need @Red Leg or @rookhawk to weigh in on this. Also it doesn't state that the S&B scope is included in the price. If it is, the scope could be worth half of the asking price. Interested in what one of these members have to say.

The metal work looks decent. The stock shaping is pretty good. The finish and checkering are amateur but a master could strip, grain fill, harden the checkering and point them properly. ($600)

I ALWAYS assume a custom 404 Jeffery does not feed properly. Always. ($400)

the parts are all good quality era and rechnagel. The pivot mounts are worth $700. The scope is worth about $1500. The bottom metal is worth $500, three position safety $350. The trigger group $350.

A man could do worse than buying that rifle. I’d feel better if it was a grand cheaper as then you’d be able to allocate a grand to any unfortunate surprises.

I’d say haggle for it and send it off to get the stock properly finished and fitted to your exact measurements and get it proven to feed softs and solids of your preferred make.

If you were totally f’d over and it’s a gun for the scrap heap, there are still $4000 in parts on that gun. I like those worst case scenario odds on these types of guns.

The stock has several imperfections you can see from the pics. I agree that the checkering isn’t great…

I would definitely have the barrel cut down to 23 inches from the 26.
Since being burned on my last 404, I’m skeptical to do anything like this again. Heym is definitely a better bet but costs double.

You get what you pay for. If you can oford a Heym then go for it. That is the best bet.

You have a RSM 416 Rigby already.. 404 is not going to out do the 416. YOU want a 404. Then get a good one like Heym and be content
Krish.

@krish You know you’re right. You always make sense!

Safari money is first priority right now though.

Scope does not come with it

Then its not such a great deal. It’s just fair so-so. You always wonder when there is a half measure in a custom gun. They cut corners by not using a magnum Mauser action, while not a dealbreaker, they are asking $6000 for an unscoped gun from an unknown US custom guy. Parts were overall good, but it sounds like a lot of money. For $6000, you can by a C&H .404J made in London on a Mauser action.

With the scope, it would have made the gun a reasonable buy with little downside.

When you read the description in the link it is advertised in you can see in the last sentence that you need a scope.View attachment 447078
You're right and I hadn't read the "fine print" the first time but still, why put a up a photo specific to the scope brand if it's not for sale?
I've burned through my gun budget and then some recently so it's beyond my reach anyway...I just thought it strange.
Thank you for pointing it out.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.
