Anyone reload for the Ruger No. 1 A Sporter in .35 Whelen? It's the middle one in the picture of my beloved trio of No.1s. Top one is a 7x57 and bottom is a 6.5x55. The .35 Whelen likes the 200 and 250 factory Remington Core-Lokts. I have a variety bullets from the Hornaday 200 Gr., Nosler Partitions and Accubonds in 225 Gr. and 250 Gr. A variety of powders from RL-15, Varget, and IMR 4320. Not looking to harvest dump trucks, just whitetail and hogs. Happy New Year to all.

My cousin has the same No. 1 as you do in 35 Whelen. His gun shoots well with 225 Gr. Hornady Interlocks or Nosler Partitions using IMR 4064. Nosler has data on their website but it doesn't include IMR 4064. Several medium burning rate powders should work well in the Whelen. The manuals I have only show data for 200 and 250 gr. bullets so we started with 250 Gr. data and worked up to a mid point between the 250's and the data shown for 200 gr. bullets.

Thanks for the info Labman. Happy New Year.

i came into a few hundred 250 gr round nose bullets over the summer and will test them as soon and it gets decent out, they should be dandy for deer-bear at 2400 fps out to 200 yards.
Loaded up some 200 Gr. Hornady Interlocks I had in my stash with RL-15. Will be testing them out this weekend along with some 225 Gr. Partitions as well. Never used the .35 Interlocks before, so curious on how they will shoot.

I've shot a couple of truckloads of elk with several .35 Whelen rifles. Almost all were with 250 gr. bullets loaded at 2500 FPS. Powder was usually IMR4064, but Varget and RL 15 also served well. A wonderful cartridge and bullet weight for elk size animals. I can't help you with whitetails and hogs, I almost always used my Whelens for bigger critters. My only experience with whitetails was a couple that I shot with .35 Whelen bullets that were too tough and didn't expand quick enough for fast kills. I suppose that's why they make 200 grain Hornady Interlocks and Remington PSP's. I got good target accuracy and speed with those two bullets with W748 and IMR 3031 powder. Never tried hunting with them though.

@LT Backstrap
Two powders you are missing are varget and Hodgdon CFE 223
If you look up on line speer and nosler reloading sites you will find loads that safely getting 250gr out at 2,700fps and 225s at upto 2,900fps.
I have had the 200s at 3,100fps but that was stretching the friendship even tho I had no pressure signs I just wasn't comfortable with them at that speed. Dang they sure rung steel tho.
Cfe223 is the best powder I have ever come across for the Whelen, good speeds and great accuracy.

CFE223 works wonders behind the old Hornady round nose. Work up from 63 to 66 grains. The Hornady roundnose has a short bearing surface so need a bit more coal to get it going. You should be up around 2,680fps with that load.
It punches golf ball size holes out the other side of a large oryx bull so should work well for you.
The usual caution applies. This load was safe in my rifle. Start low and work up.

@Longwalker
The 200gn Remington PSPs were made for the 350 rem mag for use on moose sized game so are a pretty tough bullet.
The 200gr FTX and Interlock expand well at the standard whelen velocity but tend to expand rather violently at 2,900++ fps.
I have got hold of some 225gn Woodleigh RN to try hopefully this year.

If you use the search on AH you will find buckets full of load data for the Whelen.
I have learnt to load the Whelen to its FULL POTENTIAL and it turns it into an entirely different beast from the anaemic factory loads.
With good loads and 225gn accubonds it shoots flatter than the 308 with 150gn SSTs and has around 2,000fpe of energy remaining at 400 yards. More than enough for most animals.
Hope you enjoy working up some safe potent loads for your Whelen.

Thanks Bob, have some good stuff for my model 700 Classic in .35 Whelen. Now experimenting with the No. 1 in .35 Whelen. It really likes the 250 Gr. Remington factory Core-lockts. Just ordered some Hornady 250 Gr. Interlock spire points to test out. No round points to be found. Got some partitions and accubonds I'm sitting on since they are hard to find and Nosler is quite proud of them with their current prices.

Hello LT Backstrap.

Though not quite the same, I have a Ruger #1S with a 24" barrel, blued steel and Walnut; I think this was a Lipsey's (local Louisiana distributor, with an "in" with Ruger). They spec and but nice Ruger #1"s since the line was discontinued.

It's quickly becoming my favorite rifle. Mounted with a Leupold 1.5-4X Euro-30 with the German #4 reticle.

Checking my reloading book: Please use all precautions in working up loads, start 5-10% below and work up looking for pressure signs. I also run the exact same loads through my custom 1912 Steyr Mauser 98 with a 24 " barrel with same good results.

I do not have a chronograph (shame on me) but will soon and just followed reloading manual data (Lee, Hornady, Nosler).

225 Grain Siearra BTSP 55 grains Varget , 3.260 OAL
225 Nosler Accubond, 56 gr Varget, 3.300 OAL
250 grain Hornady RN 54.5 grains Varget 3.2623 OAL.

All were accurate and hit close to the same POI. Approximately 1.5 MOA, off a standing rest.
These are not MAX loads but shoot very well in my rifles.

I have another Mauser 98 (Husqvarna) that's about to be barreled to the 35 Whelen.
Hope this helps.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.

I read your thread with interest. Would you mind sending me that PDF? May I put it on my website?
