9.3x62mm vs. .375 H&H Mag

Just curious, what did you pay for your 9.3. I payed $700 for a good used M70 CRF 375. And $900 for a nearly new ZKK 602 375.
Your thread also happens to be about reloading the 9.3.
Its fine if you like the 9.3 better, but I’m not sure it’s cheaper.

I paid $770 for a brand new Sauer 100 Black.
All used Winchester M70’s here were, and continue to be, in the neighborhood of $1750 and much above.

While I agree 100% with you guys, I can tell you from experience that a well placed shot from a Lott is more immediately decisive than a similarly placed bullet from a 9.3/.375.

Exactly. It is a "straw man" argument that is brought up here constantly that big bores cause flinch and people that shoot them are bad shots as a result.

I paid 650 Canadian for a like new Zastava 9.3 in stainless. I also have a project gun in 9.3 on a Dumoulin action, but I have not made much progress on it so far. I wanted to build a Winchester 95 into a 9.3, but I couldn't figure out whether a 98 barrel would work since that is about the only barrel I have access to.

I’ve never understood the idea of not learning to do everything required to overcome the effects of recoil of big bores to master those firearms. No matter how big the projectile is it’s worthless if we can’t hit what we are shooting at.

In a different time Don Heath argued that one requirement for an African rifle, in a world of terrorism and poachers was to have a gun that you could reasonably run through 30 rounds of ammo with, both in terms of shooting and hitting with the thing, and cost of ammo. He had a 9.3 with a box magazine, aimpoint, and CRF action, that he liked, and that as far as decisive was concerned he personally felt he would need to go to the 500 Jeffery to get any particular improvement. I just quote Don, since he was such a 9.3 proponent, at least at his skill level.

So in the world of one upmanship:

Apprentice Level: So crap the only thing you can shoot accurately is a 9.3x62
Journeyman Level: Can shoot a 450 Lott accurately, and depend on the wounding effect.
Master Level: All you need is a 9.3x62

Not sure I'd go that far. I've seen plenty of videos of guys shooting thumpers poorly, who clearly had never spent any real time at the range with them.

On this forum, I expect there are few of that ilk, though.

Well, if we are going to use YouTube as a standard I have seen plenty of videos of guys shooting 5.56s poorly as well. Busy turning $$$$ to noise.

apples and oranges, amigo

A very valid point. I think many people, including myself, can should large bores (40+) with consistent accuracy. Just have never understood the point of lugging one around when a .375 does it just as well. ;)

I only knew one guy who did a lot of outfitting for Africa, out of Canada. He felt the average guy he dealt with could barely shoot at all. And it seems to be confirmed by the common suggestion that sports should not come to Africa overgunned.

But the best evidence for the proposition that the average person is not so great with heavy recoiling rifles, is surely this:

Important to keep in mind that all the rifles in the video were 9.3x62, of unusually high mass.

Well my .375 and .458 Lott are identical right down to weight. The .375 is a bit heavy, the Lott a little light. I shoot them equally well and I feel that the Lott opens up shot opportunities that may not be advisable with the smaller calibers. I also just like the way the Lott hits them. It is a very significant difference.

:S Bs Flag:What absolute BS. This video has been around forever. They are firing a .577 Tyrannosaur https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.577_Tyrannosaur at a range in Dubai.

And you might want to meet another guy or two.

Agreed, there’s a bunch of guys on this site who have hunted much more dangerous game than the big 5. I suspect that they shoot just fine under pressure.

That seems a little high, shop around you can get a CRF 375 for $1000. Even new. As far as ammo goes, you could get federal blue box for $49.99 before this crap happened.

I’m a little out of my depth here as I have zero experience with the 9.3x62. However, that said, I find it difficult to understand why these circular firing squad discussions merit anything other than mild interest. Shoot what works for you, is legal and fits the situation.

@Tam Dl
In a situation like that with the RIGHT projectile in the brain box should work OK. Not a position I would like to be in personally.

Here’s a little excerpt from a Bob Mitchell in Canada.

What the .375 H&H will do with a 300gr, the 9.3 x 62 will do from a 286gr, and both have the same SD. But the heavier you go the closer they get!

A 300gr from the 9.3 x 62 in a 22.5″ modern rifle will do 2550 fps/ 4331 ft-lbs at 64,000 PSI. From a 320gr it will make 2460 fps/ 4300 ft-lbs at the muzzle. A 286gr NP from mine (22.4″ barrel) makes 2630 fps/4392 ft-lbs quite easily. RL-17 is used in all those loads.

Many experienced PH’s and hunters of each have testified that they have discerned no difference in their effect on mega fauna.

One thing that is interesting is that in discussions like these that devolve into big bore vs medium bore, a number of the folks that extol the virtues of people being more accurate with the medium bores also, at the same time, point out the greater magazine capacity of the medium bores.

Suppressive fire before that deadly accurate shot?

What don't you understand about "joke".

"And you might want to meet another guy or two." You are the guy writing that on all the washroom stalls?
