460 Weatherby Magnum For Sale Price Reduced

You mean the elephant , I suppose.

I used cartridges reloaded with the 500gr FMJ bullet from Hornady with a muzzle velocity of about 2500 fts. I don't think that the 100 fts less than the supposedly 2600 fts velocity of the factory loads make a difference.

I shot it with a frontal brain shot , and as often , to be safe , fired two shots from close range in the head and chest. It is the only elephant I have shot with the cartridge 460WM. I shot the others with the cartridge 500 Schüler.

Thank you , Kurpfalzjager . I am of view that your success can be attributed to the fact that you hand loaded your ammunition to achieve a slightly lower velocity of 2500 feet per second ( even though your experience points otherwise and I completely respect that and find it feasible ) . In my experience , a difference of 100 feet per second CAN play a factor in determining bullet deformation .
To put matters into perspective :
The very early .375 Holland & Holland magnum calibre ammunition , loaded by ICI Kynoch used to have a higher velocity than later loadings . Unfortunately , these bullets were also vulnerable to ( occasionally ) distorting . After World War 2 , ICI Kynoch reduced the velocity by about 100 feet per second . This gave the .375 Holland & Holland magnum the stellar reputation which it enjoys so much today .

The picture is of poor quality , sorry !

The row above are 500gr SP interbond bullets removed from buffaloes. The 2 bullets below left are 500gr FMJ bullets from the elephant. The rest are 535gr FMJ bullets caliber .510 from Woodleigh , also from elephants. These bullets are not deformed.

No apology necessary . This is beautiful ! The .500 Jeffery is a calibre which I would really love to shoot someday . It leaves very little to be desired in the face of the biggest and the baddest.

Beautiful gun, but unfortunately I'm collecting Mark V's that were made in Germany in the 60's & 70's. The 460 is one of the few I don't have yet. So sorry, I would have gobbled it up! Thanks for your quick response and good luck. If I move over to American models, I'll give you a shout!

I have 4 WHBY. mags made in the 50s my favorite is the 300 WHBY mag. made in 1956 a four digit serial nu. that starts with a 3 and on a Mauser action. Not for sale but will show a picture for you to gaze I collect English doubles and Weatherby's made in the 50s. That is the 300 WHBY waiting for me to unbox the new scope and mount it.

Really nice rifle at a more than fair price. Back in January, I went to a gun show here and a seller had a newer .460 for $3,100.00, and it probably wasn’t a U.S. made rifle. I remember as a teenager in the mid seventies, driving to Weatherby’s South Gate location only a couple of miles from my home, and gazing at their rifles on display. But by then, I believe their rifles were being made at the Howa factory in Japan. Good luck on the sale, it’s a great price for a U.S. made Weatherby!

Nice rifle at a good price. What is the barrel length?

458 WM and 460 Wby is like comparing diff solar systems! While I believe one is too little (<2,090 fps) and the other too much, both the muzzle brake and some (smartly) reduced loads would pay dividends (say 2,450 fps'ish?) What the 416s and 458 Lott/Wyatt/A-Sq/Ackley have been doing for years cannot be exceeded with additional velocity. Read what Kevin Robertson has to say on this very subject. Nice gun. 'Had a lot of other Wbys from CA over the years (loved the .257s but wore so many out, .340, .338-378, .224.) 'Referred to all as Cannons! I think the biggest complaint about the 460 is Clients just not being able to accurately place shots (that don't need placement at that sort of velocity and felt recoil). Good luck. I must say that my son managed to bag a buffalo at 20 yds with my old 458 WM and the heaviest handloads-as it was a pleasure to shoot accurately! He has since traded "up" to a .375 using 350 gr bullets and I "down" to a .416 Chatfield-Taylor using that same WM case @ 2,350-2,450 fps (the magic numbers!)

Weren't the Schuler rounds stolen by the Brits after wartime? i.e. Jeffery or Rigby?? 416 and 500?? If I had one made today, I'd call it Schuler! :)

It is a good price (I typ see 'em for $2,450ish) and a beautiful rifle!

With the reduced loads, you'll not test that non-CRF Mk V's extractor, either. 'Had some Wby cases stick in hot weather in the past (while hunting non-DG). ;)

Somebody buy it or this will morph into Tarbe’s epic classifieds Remington .416 Taylor camouflage stocked rifle from last October! Step up you “girly men”!

Hello Mark, is the rifle still available? If so I am interested. Thanks

Relax ! He just wants to try it out ONCE , since he never saw a client bring 1 to India for shikar ( it used to be be largest commercially available rifle calibre available , during our time .)
He is a practical fellow who has written numerous articles for African Hunting Forums. He merely wishes to try it out .

I personally HAVE had clients bring .460 Weatherby magnum calibre rifles to India for shikar and I do not like the cartridge 1 bit ! Those excessively high velocities are counterproductive ....to put it lightly . A good dangerous game calibre should not have a velocity much higher than 2350 feet per second .
may I ask what a Shikar is?

Well, I shot the .460WBM a few times, and if you think that kicks, you really wouldn't like my 30-378 WBM! I have 13 German Weatherby's now and are working thru the calibers on different hunts. Last May, I used the 240WBM on reedbuck, red Letchwe, and 2 tiny tens, but confess to using a Kimber .416 Rigby on my 46+ Buff by my PH's advice. He doesn't like Weatherby's much either, but he's slowly being converted. I barely got my .340WBY out of the country 2 years ago. Different Strokes for different folks!
