Douglas was the producer of the film, and wanted a part in it. But using the name Remington?? Of course I suppose some people might have wondered why his character was named after a type writer company!

Oh ... you have no idea , Sestoppelman . I actually watched this film for the very 1st time in 2001 . As soon as I heard that his name is " Remington " and that he is carrying an iconic double barreled side by side rifle ... I immediately found myself wondering if Remington indeed DID manufacture any double barreled rifles ( Which I was not aware of ) .

In real life ... Colonel Patterson had dispatched those 2 brutish man eating lions , by using a Martini Henry falling block rifle which was chambered in .577/450 Martini Henry .

I immediately found myself wondering if Remington indeed DID manufacture any double barreled rifles ( Which I was not aware of ) .

In real life ... Colonel Patterson had dispatched those 2 brutish man eating lions , by using a Martini Henry falling block rifle which was chambered in .577/450 Martini Henry .

Oh Lord. Because of this thread I watched "Shout at the Devil" for the first time in probably 40 years. I had forgotten what an awful movie it was. Lee Marvin apparently thinks he is in a comedy while around him the local population is being strung up and his grandchild is murdered by German Askaris. Really good book however.

Roger Moore was also a notorious anti hunter , Sir . He even made some very negative and irrational comments about hunting ... After shooting this film .

I enjoyed "Harry Black and the Tiger"

An interesting little bit of trivia is that the James Purdey brand .500/465 Nitro Express calibre double barreled side by side rifle used by Stewart Granger in the film ... Was purchased at an auction house in Calcutta , just prior to filming . It originally belonged to His Royal Excellence , The Maharajah of Bhopal . After His Royal Excellence passed away ... His 7 rifles and 7 shot guns were all auctioned off , by his Estate . Stewart Granger loved this rifle so much ... That he kept it as a personal possession in real life . After the filming of " Harry Black & The Tiger " was completely wrapped up ... Mr . Granger used that double barreled rifle to hunt a royal Bengal tiger , a bull gaur bison and a sambhur deer in South Bangalore.

Considering how many of these magnificent fire arms were sadly destroyed by the Indian government in 1972 ... It is a blessing to know that Stewart Granger had saved that beautiful rifle from a similar fate .

There is one movie that I can't remember the title of, it was about two young children , a bother and sister I think, who got separated from their parents somewhere in North Africa and walked all the way home to, I think, South Africa. If my memory is right it was based on a true story.

That's not it but I'll have to look that one up and watch it. I think I will be looking up a lot of movies with African locations and topics. The movie I remember was made in either the 50's or 60's and the children made their way from North Africa like Tunis or somewhere down south towards South Africa. I watched it as a teenager in the 60's.

I was talking to my son at dinner tonight about the various movies mentioned on this tread. He brought up a movie that most have probably never heard of nor watched, I know I hadn't. That movie is Tremors 5. He said it takes place in South Africa and features Bert, incase some of you are Tremors aficionados Bert is a gun guy, a mans man extraordinaire.

The first one was the best and the Old West prequel was fun. But the one in South Africa and the one after that were... um... At least they starred Michael Gross and he's getting plenty of mileage as the character 30 years later?

I don't believe Remington did ever make a double rifle (single-shots yes, their Rolling Block and the Remington-Hepburn rifle) but Colt did make them alongside their 1878 double-barrel shotguns.

Yes "Out of Africa" is wonderful, and so are many movies listed above, but they are only peripherally about hunting.

Gentlemen, have you ever watched "In the Blood"?

It is a unique 1 hour 30 minutes blend of feature movie, modern hunting narrative, and historic documentary and safari film. It was never a commercial success and its diffusion has almost been confidential, but its used DVDs change hand for $400 to $500, and incredibly (!) it is currently posted on U Tube and has not yet been taken down.
