Is the 465 H&H as dead as your dinner?

I was just curious as to what brand of rifle you own that is chambered for the .400 h & h? I have been unable to find any information for that cartridge chambered in a rifle in the U.S.? I really like the dimensions of that cartridge. Thanks!
I am in the process of having one built on a Brno ZKK 602. The rifle was a 375 H&H and will be reamed out to the larger 400. Barrel was made by Douglas. I suspect you could have one made from most 375 H&H actions.

Ok, thanks a lot for your input. So far, I haven't been able to find .400 cases (or dies) in the states. So, maybe this is a moot point anyway. But, the cartridge is a great design. I was reading where h & h developed this cartridge in response to some "pressure" issues with the .416 Rem Mag? How true this is, I'm not sure? Thanks!

Not so fast sparky! Dies from CH4D and brass from Qual-cart. Now, get building that rifle!

Cool! I'll check those out!

I never did understand why they went with that bullet diameter.

I guess when you are H&H, you can do things differently!

That case at .474 would be a .470 Capstick on steroids! Plus you could get bullets!

I wish they had made the 400 H&H in .423 caliber, had to be different though lol

Yeah, I guess it is a .411 bore (help Pheroze) ? Maybe it should have been a .416 bore? But, it is what it is?

Yes, totally goofy size. I believe it is one of the 450/400 original options. Bullets are available from Barnes, North Fork, cutting edge and some others. Its essentially a enhanced, bolt action, 450/400.

I can't find CH4Ds website. But, I have their phone number in Ohio. Qual-cart has .400s for about $50.00 us for 20 cases. AND, I located the "hens teeth". 465s for about $99.00/20 cases (OUCH!), but they will MAKE them when they have enough orders (probably never?).

I thought you were going to build one for me? Ha!Ha! No but seriously, I would think a Mauser action and barrel in .375 would work? Same length as a .375 cartridge with the barrel reamed out to .411? I'll have to do some more research, but this cartridge is intriguing to me.

Oops! 3.550" cartridge length vs. .375 at 3.600" length. Still requires a magnum length action, I would assume?

I know it as identical COL to the 375

Interesting, if you compare the 465 H&H to the 500 A-Square you see both are based on the Weatherby case. But, the 465, in my humble opinion, appears to be more manageable and balanced.

But the quiet on this topic tells the tale. Too bad.

Old adverts from H&H directed toward getting some market share back from 450 Rigby, and 470 especially after 450 cal banned by the Brits.............Imperial 38-55 not much better than original black powder load. Have shot deer and lope with original loading 42-45 grains Fg and a 255 grain cast bullet at about 1300 fps. Old smokeless loads I have ran about 1480 fps....required some careful shots on moose I'll bet..................FWB

Hey, Backyardsniper is looking for a caliber to build a rifle on. I suggested to him the .400 h and h? I also suggested if he wanted to consider the .465, you could fabricate him some cases from the .460 Weatherby?

Yeah, I can’t imagine shooting a moose with the .38-55. My hunting buddy shot a cow moose four times with his .30-06 at 25 yds., and he told me the moose just stood there for awhile before toppling over. All body shots! However, he was using Sierra 165gr bullets, which I find kill well, just NOT quick. So, he goes out and buys a .45-70, then uses my .338 Browning in Newfoundland!

I would imagine you could make them from the Weatherby cases but not sure what it would entail. If someone builds a 465 H&H it would certainly be an ongoing project to keep it fed.

Yeah, probably overall less expensive to buy them from Qual-cart (@$99.00/20) when they have enough orders to manufacture them? But, I’m sure the .460 Weatherbys aren’t cheap either.

Just mostly dead. I don't have the rifle. A friend gave them to me from a closed custom ammo company. I have them as a conversation starter on my desk
