OK. One more question. On line G5 it asks the reason for bringing in a rifle to SA. Obviously to hunt. But is that all I need to put in or do I need to go into detail? Just wanting to avoid any hangups at the airport.
Speedster, I use Rifle Permits. The letter I receive from my outfitter is for the package I submit to Rifle Permits. It can be used as confirmation that I will be hunting in SA. If you're not using a go between and your outfitter says you don't need one, just go with that.OK. I am getting a little uneasy with my US rep. According to him the 4457 form which I got last December is good. According to what several people here said it has to be dated sometime this year. No problem. I am going by the airport in a couple weeks so I will just get another form. But it concerns me that he does not have up to date info. And now according to Sierraone I need a letter from the outfitter. My rep said only if I was going to hire a go between like riflepermits. Asking for help and info on this. This forum is saving my butt. Thanks in advance.

Do they keep records of form 4457? How would they know you are getting a duplicate? The 4457 rule is on the South African side not the US side. The actual 4457 never expires but someone in the SA government who works with rifle permits decided that it needs to be dated the same year that you visit SA.
It is one of the hoops that we need to jump through to get a firearm into THEIR country. If your customs agent here in the US is balking at giving you a new 4457 just tell him that you lost your old one or that your house burned down with it in it. Better yet tell him that you were in a survival situation and it was used to start a fire to save your life.
Yes just HUNTING will be fine.OK. One more question. On line G5 it asks the reason for bringing in a rifle to SA. Obviously to hunt. But is that all I need to put in or do I need to go into detail? Just wanting to avoid any hangups at the airport.
