My taxidermy arrived to Houston back in July of 2016.

Monday I get a letter in the mail from the State of Texas - Business Activity Research Team.

Basically the letter says "Hey buddy, you owe us tax on the $12,000 of art, collection pieces or antiques you imported last year".

I have officially refused to pay (in writing), explaining what was actually in that giant box.

They say they are thinking about it and will get back to me in a couple weeks.

Anyone else in Texas have this happen with finished taxidermy coming in from RSA?

Tim

Oh Lordy.....

No sir

o_O wow

Curious if it because it was valued at over $10k..... that seems to be the threshold for claiming, entering in the USA for US Customs claim form.

Something tells me you might be right.

Damn @tarbe talk about a delayed reaction.

Now that doesn't sound like fun. Hope you can get it worked out. Bruce

Damn Tim, why you smuggling South African art into Texas! Lol
Just let them know you gave at the office plenty to cover your fair share of WIC, Lone Star Cards and other programs that keep all of our less than motivated citizens and illegals eating plenty so they can stay strong enough to break into our trucks and houses while we are at work.
Seriously though if it is in fact above a 10k cap,
You should be able without to much effort break out how much of the 12k is actually labor/service paid for and actual intrinsic value. We all know are taxidermy is not something that if liquidated we could come close to recovering actual costs. I'm pretty sure Warren Buffet is not heavily invested in plains game shoulder mounts.
Good luck buddy!

Man I hope the rotten apple AKA NY don't follow suit...

Yeah..... I'd just reply back.... It was a typo..... Should have be $1200.... not $12000.

OK Tim, or any others, help me to understand here. The State is saying that the value of your imported "box", the mounts, were worth $12000 or the value of your entire hunt, including the mounts are worth $12000. Was the taxidermy worth $12000 alone? I realize my question is not clear...but neither am I!!!

Somehow/somewhere on a declarations $12000 had to have been stated. either by @tarbe or the taxidermy & freighter. Typically, for insurance & customs purposes. Technically, it is an "import".

Never heard of this although all my Texas buddies do dip and pack only, no taxidermy.

I feel for you Tim. This sucks.

Let us know how this turns out.

Nothing like a typo. Anyway zero means nothing![emoji15][emoji849]

I believe I would have had to tell them in no uncertain terms to go fornicate themselves and that the popping sound they heard is the sound of their heads being removed from their asses. It's taxidermy work and no tax is owed.

Might want to look at your sales tax permit. I suspect is says: Sales and Use Tax Permit. And my guess it that based on the value the Comptrollers office is looking for the use tax. Just like the sales tax you would charge for a mount in the Great State of Texas.

I didn't see your request re: ship co’s. My last shipment was 2023. Quotes from SBS Logistics ($1,198), Badger Cargo ($1,184 - used them) & AHG Trophy Shippers ($1,746). AHG owner's an asshole so wouldn't have used him anyway. Eastern Cape - Houston, TX, so your mileage may vary. NEVER use Karl Human Taxidermy aka Wild Africa Taxidermy on Eastern Cape. Trophies arrived shattered with no padding/packing material.
