I'll go ahead and apologize for the rookie question. My preferred quarry would be a mature free-range bull. I've spent some time reviewing the hunting reports. My research tells me that Zimbabwe has good hunting grounds for mbogo, though there seems to be some civil unrest at the moment. South Africa is very popular, but I really don't want to hunt behind any high fences (had a previous bad experience with this in the states). What about Mozambique? Any suggestions from those with personal experience in this matter would be appreciated.

Me too!

The Caprivi in Namibia seems to produce great trophies. The Zambezi Delta in Mozambique is know for herds in the hundreds. I think there are numerous options in Zimbabwe and Zambia as well.

Best of luck in your research, I hope you get to hunt Nyati!

There is some great buffalo hunting in Mozambique. If you're interested and want more information give @Tootabi Valley Safaris a PM. He hunts at Mahimba and they have some great buffalo and it is true free range. And the bushbuck... :A Banana Sad:

I'm with you on SA buffalo and with what you will have to pay for free range SA you might as well go to Zim, Zam, or Moz.

Mozambique
Zimbabwe
Zambia
Namibia
Tanzania

Tanzania has the largest Cape Buffalo population. You can take 3 on a 21 day license.

Due to remote areas, and expensive charter flights, as well as government fee's, it can get pricey.

Is there much buff hunting in Botswana anymore? I got one there but it was years ago before all the closures.

For the feeling of stepping back it time and hunting buffalo Mozambique would be at the top of my list I hunted buffalo there a few years ago and loved it. Tanzania if I had unlimited funds. The Caprivi would also be up there As well I would really like to hunt the Kwando Core area that Karl runs from @Ndumo Hunting Safaris. If funds allow it I will probably be hunting buffalo and elephant with Ndumo in a few years. Just got back from a elephant hunt with him and would highly recommend a buffalo hunt with them.

I have hunted buffalo in both the Caprivi and Mozambique next year. I am going back to Mozambique. It is more affordable than the Caprivi, and it is one of those places where three miles from the airport in any direction could be a scene from 1916 as easily as 2016. It is also a very practical place to take a quality free range sable, nyala, and bushbuck on the same hunt.

There have been some better deals offered this year for buffalo in Tanzania. That or Mozambique would be at the top of my list for the hunt you inquired about. But I would remain open to Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Namibia in the right areas.

In terms of value and experience Zimbabwe is hard to beat. I have hunted buffalo in Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, and the Republic of Congo. Zimbabwe is a great destination, especially for a first time English speaking client. There are several very good outfitters with great areas in Zimbabwe. They will not be the cheapest, but I could never afford to go on a cheap safari.

This fellow hunter made an excellent choice on his first buffalo hunt.

There is still ranch hunting. Everything else,... by by.

If you're worried about the unrest in Zimbabwe, I don't think you'll find Moz much better at the moment, and perhaps worse. They actually have an insurgency going, although it (currently) appears "manageable." Personally, I wouldn't worry about going to Zimbabwe. Your PH will pick you up and whisk you out of town before you have a chance to see a protest. And it will be like the "good old days" - they will love to see fresh, crisp, US dollars!

I have hunted buffalo in both RSA and Zimbabwe - multiple times in each. The hunts can be as similar as you want them to be, or completely different. In Zimbabwe, the hunts tend to be for free ranging buffalo on large concessions. Success depends on a number of factors, including the amount of rain (more is bad), and your ability to walk. You may find that an area which had large numbers of bulls last year has very few today. Equally, if there has been little rain, you will be able to get on tracks much more easily at the few(er) waterholes remaining. In both cases, that's hunting.

You can also have traditional tracking hunts in South Africa, but you will likely (but not necessarily always) be in a fenced area. It might be tens of thousands of acres, so I'd suggest it's essentially the same a free range (at least I haven't found any meaningful difference), but you have to make that determination for yourself. The biggest difference between Zim and RSA is that in South Africa, you can make things easy for yourself if you want, because you will know the buffalo are there, and you can drive around until you find them. Some PHs will want you to hunt that way - if you don't want to, you just have to make that clear.

Personally, I think it would be a shame to hunt buffalo other than in the traditional, tracking, manner. On foot. You can have that experience in South Africa. You just have to ask for it.

Thanks guys for all of the great information. As was pointed out, the guy in this thread seems to have just had a great experience in Zim:

That sounds like exactly the type of trip I would like to take one day. And there appear to be scores other good hunting reports out of Zimbabwe. That may be the top of my list. I plan on looking into Mozambique too. I don't mind there being civil unrest as long I don't feel my life is in danger from it. I'm willing to accept the risks the wildlife may pose, as that is part of the allure anyway. I'd rather be gored by a pissed off buffalo than be taken hostage by some insurgents.

Totally agree with Hank. I also have a personal rule that I won't hunt a buffalo that's within 170 km of a fast food restaurant, but that's just me. ;)

The issues with Renamo are relegated to a relatively small part of the country and have been going on for years. Stay out of that area (and any reputable outfitter won't take you there) and no problem. Like you said, it is all about risk tolerance and sounds like you're willing to take on some. I think Zim and Moz would both work for you. You definitely have options. :)

Taken on my last trip.

Pulling up to the drive thru on the right side of the vehicle messes with my head.

Really? It's because of rules like this that hunting gets a bad name. I prefer my Steer burger to be as close to the source as possible, and I think every anti would as well. Fresher is better. For once, the antis and I are on the same page. Long live fresh! (Or so I tell my wife).

I had a great free range experience in Zim with Martin Pieters Safaris. You will hunt for them, but they have lots of buff and its a wild place.
