W. J. Jeffery 600 NE

It’s hard to explain how some rifles just feel “set apart”, the sense that one should feel an added weight of responsibility to be the custodian of certain guns. This is such a rifle, in my humble opinion.

This is my W.J. Jeffery & Co. .600 Nitro Express underlever, serial number 20078 (1908), it is truly a commanding rifle from the heart of the dangerous game era. Built to master the immense power of the .600 cartridge, its underlever action delivers unwavering strength and reliability when it matters most. Heavy, steady, and deliberate in the hands, it was made for close, decisive moments on the largest game….built for absolute certainty when there is no margin for error.

That is shockingly light for a vintage British 600! The last vintage 600 I handled was around 19 pounds if my memory serves me right. Even at that weight the recoil was quite fierce.

I know the gun wasn’t really “fun” to shoot, but Mark didn’t flinch. Not even remotely.

I have not shot a .600 but my .500 has the same affect on everyone that shoots it. The first is "wtf just happened" and then immediately followed with smiles and giggling.
