The prey is practically a genius. I have become a real crank, some of you may have noticed, due to 5 nights of very poor sleep trying to kill it....a Norwegian rat! First one to ever make it into the house in 40 years. Wife would kill me if she saw me post about this, but I need HELP. I have scoured the internet for ideas. Even tried the five gallon bucket water trap, baited with peanut butter.

No trap, no stickie, no bait block, or concoction of Jiffy cornbread and baking soda has been touched, no mixture of confectioners sugar and plaster of Paris, either. It has no attraction to drinking anti-freeze; maybe the new stuff isn't sweet enough. Nothing has been touched, even in the attic or crawlspace. Wax rat blocks always worked before in the attic.
No leopard has been more clever. Ideas?.....

You need a feral cat

I’m not a cat person at all… but they are vicious little bugger when it comes to mice and rats…

My parents moved out to a rural piece of property several years ago on about 5 acres… they adopted “Garfield” some feral cat that was just roaming around out there… they started putting food by the back door, and would let him into the garage on cold nights, etc …

He never came inside.. and was never really tamed… but he knew who took care of him…

They literally never saw a mouse, rat, or snake within 50 yards of the house in any direction…

And about once a week, Garfield would leave them a present on the back patio by the door.. a dead mouse or rat…

Rats love to move along walls and not open floors. I had one rat in the garage, baited a big two jaw trap with Apple put it in the corner behind a tool box and two nights later bang.

I've had great luck for chipmunks and a couple rats using the standard Victor rat snap trap with either Frito chips or a pecan half smeared with a little peanut butter wired to the pan with a wire twist tie. Same for mouse traps in the garage or shed. Put traps behind some cover and along walls.

Don’t get you finger in this joker o_O Amazon or hardware store. Some feed stores sell a product called First Bite my rancher buddies like to use.

Had a buddy that got a pack rat right after hurricane mikle hit.
He Tryed everything he could think of.
A guy working for him told him to try raw meat.
And as the meat stared to smell the rat came to it and was killed buy one of the old fashioned spring traps.
Supposedly some of them develop a taste for meat.

I had a frigging rat get into my truck a couple years ago and I tried it all. Took the rear seat out and all. It got into and out of two traps in the engine compartment. I took my cat out there one evening and sat there and petted it, spread the hair all over the cab. She wondered all over that double cab trying to get out. That was the last time I saw the damn rat. It disappeared that night

I would also recommend a feral cat. I have had several over the last 20 years that live in my barn. They do get leftovers and food is put out everyday. I have never seen a live mouse or rat on the property. Occasionaly one is left on the step or patio in a trophy pose.

+1 for the cat. Our fat lazy orange cat is a prolific killer of all smaller creatures. The back garden is a scene of carnage every morning in the summer, with at least one and sometimes up to five dead rodents in varying degrees of disfigurement strewn around the yard. Never seen a rodent or any sign of them inside the house.

P.S. the dog is useless

In the dog show world they refer to their eyes as “sinister.” An apt term. He is a sworn enemy of the rodent kingdom.
Sinister!?!?! Nooo! They are CUTE all I see in them is energy and excitement :Joyful: nothing 'sinister', absolutely adorable species & I love that they are short haired to! When the time is right I will absolutely be getting one.

Trail cameras and rat traps of many types.... YouTube mouse trap Mondays. A great channel with hundreds of ideas

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
