Magpul daka system in a pelican 1700 and blaser r8

In case others are curious, here's a brief review of something I had high hopes for. (Well... Medium hopes)

I grabbed a black Friday deal on the well heralded Magpul daka storage system for my pelican case.

First impressions:
I like it. But I don't think it works for a r8. I need tightly arranged irregular storage spaces in a small case. This requires more real estate but is highly configurable.

Pros:
Foam is like a sturdy Styrofoam
Easy to configure the layout
Tight fit. No slop. Cool idea.

Cons:
The geometry of the storage spacing you create is limited to the geometry of the blocks on a grid that only supports fixed positions made by 1.75"x3.5" spacers. Blocky and bulky and limitng for irregular shapes.
Chunk size = no bueno

(A very small percentage of you will get that. Apologies to the rest of you)

You can't accommodate irregular shapes without expanding the area to the next larger grid area which eats up space. The barrels will bounce around unless you pad them in something and creating a place for the bolt carrier is fiddly.
No chance of squeezing in 2 optics.
I could carve the blocks but that sort of defeats the purpose.

Alas, back to my artisan-carved foam. It's ugly. It looks like it was cut by Captain Hook in his later year while suffering from advanced arthritis. But it all fits.

Suggestions for Magpul if they ever read this:
Excellent concept. Make the blocks and grid spacing MUCH smaller. Go from 128 to 256 or even super VGA.

Thanks for the report. I have often considered the daka storage system as I have a bunch of pelican cases all with missing or mutilated foam.

I saw their website list it and then amazon had matching pricing (or perhaps more accurately, they had a storefront on amazon and listed their sale price.)

It still shows the price of $102 on amazon and the magpul site. I was under the impression they were typically $130-150 but perhaps I just got a "decent" price and nothing special.
Either way, planning to return it.

I don't want to disparage it. If I was using the big 1750 case, it would be very versatile for a variety of weapons. But for a small case and the r8, it's just not going to work.

I used the DAKA system recently on trip to Namibia. V800 vault with 2rifles. Kept everything secure, like OP said smaller blocks would be more versatile.

I bought this system last year. Spent about and hour trying to arrange it in a Pelican case to fit my Model 70, never could get a fit I really liked. I returned it to Amazon the same day.

I think it works a lot better for AR size and shape guns. A takedown like the R8 probably works better too.

thats exactly the one Im looking for...

Ive got a V800 Vault and Ive got a pelican storm IM3200 double rifle case.. I figured I'd start with the vault since the foam in it is trashed and see if I like it.. and if so I'd try to figure something out for the IM3200

I moved too slow it looks like.. theyre back up to $132 this morning..

will keep a better eye on Amazon.. I honestly never checked there before..

I've found that often they will match black friday deals found elsewhere.
The added benefit is the free shipping and easy returns if you use prime.
