"Obsolete" items that you still use

I use an old school double edge safety razor. Bought a couple hundred quality blades for a fraction of the cost of cartridge razors, which should last years. Also still have a CD player and a stack of CDs in my truck. There's a lot of Alaska highway without phone or radio reception and CDs have better sound quality IMO.

Most of my rifles are older than me.
I hate taking my son to museums because there's so much stuff in there I remember using as a kid. When that happens you realise you are getting old. Still have and use a VHS player and a record and cassette players.

Just a few:
1.) a compass......I have a GPS unit, but still use the compass more often than not......batteries won't ever go dead!

2.) Wooden duck calls.......my favorite is the Yentzen shure shot. I think they sound better than the acrylic, and when you accidentally drop 'em in water, they float!

3.) the pocket hand warmers that use the grey sticks that you light with a match or lighter.....don't know the name, but they stay warm for about 5-6 hours. I usually use three this time of year. Haven't been able to find any refills in a while, so when the supply I have is gone, I'll have to find something else.

4.) Wool pants/jacket......stays warm, even when wet, and doesn't "swish" like nylon when you turn to see what made that twig snap

5.) cast bullets........good enough for target practice, and I have taken a few head of game with them. Cheaper than jacketed, and as long as I have a supply of lead, I can make my own even during shortages produced by idiot political dogma!

6) Labrador retrievers! May not be "obsolete", but I still think they are the best, all around dog in the world! Haven't seen any of the "newer" hunting breeds do better. (this last one was a little tongue in cheek).

I have a whole bunch of Griswold. Some over 100 years old. Better than any modern cast iron.

I have my grandmother's Griswold skillet. Well over 100 years old. It's my cornbread skillet. It turns out great cornbread. No one including my SO is allowed to use it.

Cartridge wallets to keep ammo from jingling around in pockets. Zippo lighters that can be refueled in the field and are absolutly reliable. Brass compass and wool hunting clothing. Stormy Kromer cap. Schnees pac boots for mountain hunting. Damascus knives.

Any sailors here? A couple of years ago, I took a celestial navigation course just for fun. It’s amazing that people invented this technology before the age of computers. It’s strangely satisfying to work out problems, plotting them on my kitchen table. On actual boats, I still use GPS

Why, yes. But it was our President (Hossain Ershad) who hunted red stag with them. He was an avid sportsman of the highest order too.

They just don't make leaders like this, anymore. To the best of my knowledge... His Excellence King Juan Carlos of Spain is probably one of the few European Heads Of State left, who hunts.

How much of the Royal hunting do you know about? And other government officials?
That might make another book or at least perhaps a article or 2 for some hunting magazine.

That was my dream until I got the 1905. Wouldn’t trade it for any other rifle. It shoots where I look with no efforts or thoughts of aligning sights as it hits my shoulder the sights are already aligned. It just fits me.

None of these firearms are manufactured anymore, today.


I prefer wooden stocks to synthetic. I prefer blued steel to stainless steel. I prefer side by sides to over & unders. I prefer fixed chokes to choke tubes.

I EDC (Every Day Carry) an early Buck Model 110 lockback folding knife with a 440C stainless steel blade.

I prefer to wear my dress trousers with suspenders rather than a belt. I prefer pleated dress trousers to flat front.

I like my steaks charred over cast iron pans (none of that teflon lined non-stick garbage).

So, yeah. You could say I’m definitely an old timer.

My loving granddaughter once told me “Grandpa, the fact that you like anchovies on pizza is a tell-tale sign that you’re old !”.

I have a Brooks Brothers linen suit which I’ve been wearing since 1979.
