Not one you see very often, and know there are a few around here that adore the good ol' 458WM, so wanted to drop this here before listing anywhere else. Confirmed with Parkwest today that the gun was made very early 1987. Really curious how many 458 Safari's, if any, came before it. The metal on the gun in mint and the wood is nicely figured where it should be and strait where you would want it. The stock does have some handling marks and/or safe booboos. The most notable are a couple lines on the right side of the butt, high kind of opposite of the cheek piece and a very small but deep dent just aft of the right, front cross pin. As described, the dent is very small, but it is noticeable and would be worth correcting it on this gun that is so clean in other respects.

I texted photos to JJ today asking about the dent and buttstock marks and he said it would be $200-$250 to properly address them. The dent wouldn't be totally invisible, but would hide nicely, especially with how small it is. He would raise it some, then add a little fill, and finishing-fill and feather it if someone decided this gun is for them and wanted it fixed.

Given the early production and how rarely the chambering is seen, understand its a gun I should price higher, but want to move it along to someone who will use it, and discounting it down because of the dent.

$6,950 + Shipping and insurance of buyers choice. Not really looking for much in trades, but would happily consider some partial trade on 450 3 1/4" brass, .458 Swift and/or Woodleigh projectiles. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or specific photos.

Thank you for looking. Cheers,
Will

This is a premium 458 WM. Great for elephants
If I didnt already have some really nice Dakotas
This would be in my vault. Perfect backup gun for the double rifle DG Hunter!
Will is a top notch guy to deal with!

Beautiful rifle!

Could you tell me the length of pull and approximate weight? Thanks!

I don't see Dakota 458s very often. Nice example.

Face palm when I read this. I know better too as it’s literally the first two questions that pop to my mind or that I scan a listing for. I’m over in Seward keeping the misses happy, couple weekend with flueffy menu dinners and ocean walks. I’ll be home tomorrow and get both posted up.

Rifle weighs in at 8.5lbs, empty w/o mounts & rings. (8lb 7.45oz)

LOP is right at 13.5”.

Gentlemen,
If one thinks the .458 Win isn’t a great 100 meter cartridge, they have never loaded their own ammo for it. Two days ago my Mighty .458 Win with 450 gr CEB solids at 2325 fps punched holes in and out of large tuskless.

This Dakota.458 Win will serve its next caretaker loyally for years to come.

I have full history on the gun. Parkwest couldn’t say if any 458WM Safari before it, but certainly early build. They did have the rifle back for upgrades/updates twice, once in 2004 to have updated safety shroud, new heavier-grade floor plate, file in rear sight for Woodleigh, added pillars and bedding. Then in 2014 it came back for further updates to current Safari specs by adding crossbolts with ebony plugs, plus touch up stock finish when work performed.

Not sure where original order was shipped, but gun was residing in Houston in 2004, then apparently headed to Switzerland in 2014, unclear if it ever actually made the trip though.

Original order form.
