VX 5HD will run you $1k and up. I have two VX3HD 3.5-10 x40 with the Fire Dot reticle that I love using. Have them on Model 70s long action and use simple Leupold backcountry rings. They have held up great for me, very reliable, bright glass and hold zero even when flying to Africa and banged around by baggage handlers. They run around $599-$699. Mark Biggerstaff will get you a good deal

Exactly what I’d be running it on. A new production mod 70 Alaskan.

I don’t know which scope is most reliable, but this is my favorite. Leupold vx5 2-10 duplex not CDS $900. They are around $700-$800 lightly used here time to time. I can’t remember ever having to resight mine in before or after a safari. That’s good enough for me.

I’ve never had a problem with any of my Leupolds and my main rifle rides beside me in my truck during deer season. I recheck the zero at the beginning of each season and have never had to touch it. I would look at the VX3 or VX5, don’t think you can go wrong with either one.

I have an old Swarovski Habicht that I bought cheap. It has plenty of marks and chips off the tube coating but It’s still great scope.

Must be 2nd focal plane.
Must be a simple radical. No Christmas tree style stuff.
Must be able to fit a long action model 70 with tally style rings. I don’t want to run a rail.
Must have a good reputation for holding zero.
It will be in a scabbard on a quad and see its fair share of vibrations.
I was looking at the night force shv but it’s fairly short. Most say it doesn’t work well on a long action without running a pic rail.
Very interested in Trijicon accupoint but read mixed reviews on reliability. Same with leupold. I’m not opposed to buying used if it’s a reputable brand with a good warranty. I should add a solid 1-8 ish lpvo could also work as the rifle will be a 400 yard and in set up. Thanks folks.

My Model 70 Classic in .416 Rem mounts a Nightforce NX8 1-8x in 5.045”.

Above shows what I believe but don't remember is an extended length Talley front base.
Talley offers a Double Extended Front base for the M70 Classic. I don't know how much more mounting surface the double extended base provides. A phone call to Talley will provide anyone interested accurate information.

Let’s discuss Leupold riflescopes. In my opinion, Leupold scopes are at least 90% overall as good as anything on the market. While not the best, they have very good glass and are tough enough for most conditions. For most hunters, they are all we will ever need.

My 2¢ on durability, #1 Nightforce, #2 Trijicon. I've had heavy impacts with both and they never skipped a beat. Another thread on this topic: Post #6 has a photo of my Trijicon. Used it this year for the night hunts in RSA, Northern Cape.

Trijicon went through the U.S. mail and took a good hit to bend the end of the objective lens. Still works, just can't use a sun shield. It's the 2.5-10 Accupoint. Have it mounted on a 17 Fireball and used it today at 200m targets, no issues. Have NF and IMHO, it's a tossup between the two for able to take a beating.

Swaro z3, they disco’d the 3-9 but the 2.5-10 would be great, glass is fantastic and plenty of tube for mounting, good eye reliefs, and the erectors are smooth and positive clicks, don’t feel like there is sand in the dial like a lot of lower end leupolds. Leupolds aren’t what they used to be until you get to the upper end. Plus they look right on a rifle, not tactical like many are starting to appear.

I have had great success with Leopold VX3 scopes, my favorite is the 4.5-14 power. I have several and have used them on many hunts in some very demanding environments without issues. Recently over the past couple of years I have been using Meopta binos and a couple Meopta scopes with equal success. The Meopta glass is brighter and clearer than Leupold to my eyes but they are slightly bigger and heavier.

These American put together Steiners are a bang for your buck. Really good German glass and coating.
I believe they are put together in the Burris USA factory, but you’re getting insane Steiner glass.

I have one on a silenced 308 and Talley one piece rings. Have never re sighted it back in like 4 years haha. I check it a lot too. It gets hunted hard.

I love that it has a really big eye box. Click adjustments are really solid. And just super clear compared to most stuff I have, (I run swaro binos)

So all the pretty girls at the party can just head for the door. It will be a Trijicon, SWFA, Nightforce NX8 or Maven 1.2.

There is no Swarovski, Schmidt Bender, Zeiss, Meopta, Kohles or anything in the high dollar department that is meant to be tough.

This has been determined by Rockslide scope durability testing. Not word of mouth or any other metric. They have criteria in which they beat on scopes.

Everything else will die a thousand deaths, and may or may not be warrantied worth a damn.
