From the Dallas-based biotech company:

“We’re Colossal Biosciences, the de-extinction company responsible for bringing back the first animals from extinction. Our dire wolf pups, Romulus and Remus, were born on October 1, 2024. Watch these pups grow up on our YouTube channel. Link in bio.

These two wolves were returned from extinction using genetic edits derived from a complete dire wolf genome, meticulously reconstructed from ancient DNA found in fossils dating back 11,500 and 72,000 years. This achievement is the result of years of pioneering science, tireless innovation, and unwavering dedication.

It marks a major milestone not only for our company, but for science, conservation, and humanity. With the birth of Romulus and Remus, de-extinction is no longer theory—it’s reality. There’s more work ahead, but this moment redefines what’s possible for the planet’s future.”

Hmmm.. Probably need to check more sources. The company that did the gene work themselves says it's 99.5% respliced genes from grey wolves. since there are 24 million pairs of genes that still leaves a lot of genetic difference. Makes for a great headline but not really ready for Game of Thrones yet.

"Sorta" dire wolves, if you read closely.

I have very mixed feelings about this stuff, I've been fascinated by pleistocene north American animals my whole life, part of me would love to see a live wooly mammoth.

The other part, well, ya know, we've all seen Jurassic Park and know how this sh** always ends.

I don’t cite the headline with any particular enthusiasm. I tend to view CRISPR as opening a Pandora’s box. Put aside my reservations around technocrats playing God, the laws of unintended consequences are at play here. And as we are already learning, the Chinese are harvesting genetic data globally and running full tilt on gene editing for competitive reasons, including making themselves impervious to their own future bio weapons.

Next steps...

Next step, US Fish & Wildlife designates Critical Habitat with the blessing of the NGOs.

Next Step, US Fish & Wildlife produces a Recovery Plan under the Endangered Species Act with the scientific participation of the NGOs.

Next step, US Fish & Wildlife reintroduces a Dire Wolf Experimental Population and manages the reversing of the species extinction at "whatever the cost" * with the legal support of the NGOs.

* "... it is clear from the Act's legislative history that Congress intended to halt and reverse the trend toward species extinction whatever the cost" (U.S. Supreme Court, Tennessee Valley Authority v. Hill).

Next step, ranchers, farmers and hunters pay "whatever the cost" in lost cattle, horse, sheep, and ungulate big game.

Ask folks in rural Arizona and New Mexico about their experience with the Mexican Wolf recovery plan..........

Nailed it.

2-4-3 Winchester... everyone knows that. Ask Bob.
Isn’t there a proverb about never shooting a large caliber problem with a small caliber weapon? Looks like .458 work to me.

It's all bullet construction my friend. A nice Barnes or Hammer in 6mm and you're practically overgunned... :ROFLMAO:
that dogs going to top out about the size of a Shetland pony I’ll take a little margin of error, I’ve got a couple no.5 new houses I’d rather use. Then use a .22mag and rug him.

Just listened to the entire podcast that was on JRE. The wolves are currently about 6 months old. I’m guessing your neighbor has an incredibly large dog.
I will let you know in another six months. Lol
