If you were to trim down your dangerous game rifle collection, which cartridge/rifle would you let go and why?

Interesting question. Either my .375 H&H or .458 Lott. I find that having a 9.3x62 Highland Stalker I rarely pick up the .375 anymore. On the other hand, surgeries in both wrists (consequence of being a fairly aggressive hockey player) have made the .458 Lott a bit painful to shoot. I’m giving it a bit more time, but the Lott may end up being a casualty. Then again, it’s got a lot of stories to tell so I may just load it down and plink with it.
I will answer the question another way…I have just 3 Africa rifles, 275 Rigby, 375 H&H, 470 NE DR

I currently only own 2 DG rifles, in both 375H&H and 458WM.

The logical answer would be drop the 458 and use the 375 for everything but I right now I prefer the 458. I have several other options that perform at similar levels to the 375 but nothing close to the 458.

458 Lott, I really like my 505 Gibbs, and various 416's. So a Lott would go;)

I've been thinking about this very subject. I will never drop the 375 as I have easily used it for large to small game...and I really like the power, penetration and shootability of the 416 Rigby. Those 2 calibers cover a lot of ground for me. I am considering selling my V/C round body 500ne double and my Sterling Davenport 500 Jeffery. Probably wouldn't sell my Champlin 458 Lott.

I have done that recently. I kept my 416 Rigby Big Game. My 458 Win Mag, 2 - 375 H&H mags, and a 450-400 went to new homes.

Safe hunting

I sold my 450/400 also. Great double caliber, just surplus to my needs.

Since my wife stole my 375 H&H, I only have the 416 left… so I won’t be giving up any of my DG rifles lol…

Are you looking for something ?

Haha, not in particular. I just ordered a 416 Rigby.

Just curious to know if there was any trend between rifles /cartridges that owners would ditch moreso than others.

It seems some here would drop their light offering (375), some their heavy caliber (458) and others would drop the middle ground (416) if they also owned a 375 and 458/505 etc.

The lighter ones can do it all with a smaller margin of error. The big guns are less versatile and flexible. Depends on what your plans are. That’s also why many of us have several options.

Have or have had many different DG rifles. Have enjoyed all of them. Have thinned those down to the best of the best and currently have: (two) 375 HH, (one) 416 Rem Mag and (one) 450 Watts. My favorite of the best of the best DG rifles and last one to keep would be my Win 70 416 RM.

I've had too many standard big game rifles and calibers including the DG rifles to list, but if forced to choose last two they would be: Win 70 416 RM for DG and eland. Win 70 338-06 for everything else.

Retired and moving up in my years, so need to get my hunts in while I still am able physically, both health and skill wise and still while hunts are somewhat affordable. Rather convert hardware to more hunts. Already moved out 2 doubles, my large 500+ cannons and one more double on the block. Pretty much keeping an R8 with 3 barrels (458/416RM/3006) and my trusty M03 Africa (375HH/416RM). I'm partial to takedowns as easier to travel with, under the 62" limit etc. This is my endpoint for my overseas adventures and beyond.

Have a 375h&h, 416REM, and a 458Lott. If for some reason I could only have one. I would keep the 416REM, recoil is a little more that the 375h&h and doesn't recoil like the 458Lott. Loaded with 350gr bullets distance wise it would probably hang with the 375h&h. All that said the most practical one is the 375h&h, from that standpoint it would be hard to overlook it.

Luckily, no decisions are required to be made.

Interesting topic! This is something I’ve actually been thinking about doing since I have a bunch of overlap and duplicates. Been thinking about it for a lot of stuff that I don’t use or shoot, some of which I’ve never shot.

Not sure I could pick between the 470 and 500 doubles, but I’m likely going to force myself to choose in the near future.

I’d let the BRNO 602 in 458WM go before either M70 in 458. Same choice when it comes to the 375’s. I’d keep the Pre64 M70’s and sell the BRNO 375. I did recently let a duplicate transition period M70 in 375 go to a buddy for an upcoming hunt, keeping the one in better condition.

I will never sell my .375H&H, so versatile and the rifle I have shot the most game with, up to and including elephant..

If advancing years take their toll I might sell the .470 and the .475 and rely on my 45o/4oo 3 1/4 NE for DG...it is light and handy and fits me like a glove..and push a 400 grainer..

Hello! I saw your post from last year about a missing crate from your hunt in Moz. I am curious how that all turned out? We (my fiancé and I) also hunted in Moz in 2024 and the trophies are being shipped with Hunters Services Limitada. We have some concerns on whether we will get the trophies home or not. May I ask who you hunted with?
