I currently love the savage impulse straight pull action and everything about it however I'd like to know would it be safe to take on a project like this because I'm unsure of the actions durability since the biggest thing the savage impulse fires is the 300 win mag with 30 ish pounds of recoil and the highest pressure it can take safely is 65,000 but I'm worried the stock and action may not be strong enough because of how the action is built along with the 416 rem being hefty on recoil with 56 pounds in a 9 pound rifle does anyone have advice or experience with this rifle before I hide behind a rock and start test firing?

No idea on the stock integrity, but 416 ruger would probably be an easier conversion. It shares the same bolt face and case overall length with the 300 Win.

Is the action long enough? Don’t know but don’t think it is.
I'm not exactly sure for the big game but the precision model does feed 338 lapua with pretty big rounds so it's close I can always chamber for the ruger version instead but ive heard the ruger version is getting sparce and I don't have reloading equipment yet

oh thank you I forgot about the 416 rugar. I heard ammo might be rare but I'll be fine once I start reloading. also the stock is synthetic to my knowledge but I have heard there's aluminum wiring in it but I'm not 100% sure

I don’t know @the lower because I’ve not messed with that model. I’ve built many custom rifles and slug guns on the Savage 110 type action and I’ve been up inside of about every part of those. Can’t say that I would trust the components for a dangerous game rifle.

Things I hate about them:

Inconsistent inletting of semi custom stocks for them, warpage of factory stocks

The complexity of the accutrigger, the sensitivity and safety issues of a rifle basix trigger for heavy recoil

The savage threaded barrel nut and the potential for gas to erode the barrel/action union by torch cutting it over time shooting big catridges

The inconsistency of their tang safety wearing and changing its reliability

The bottom metal is low quality. The two piece bottom metal especially so

Their plastic magazines are inconsistent, wear easily, and are very sensitive to functioning based on bottom screw tension of the bottom metal

The squishyness and frequent malfunction of their side and bottom metal based bolt releases

The lack of true to their O.D. On the action making scope mounting frustrating if precision is the game

In conclusion:

Not sure which of the above comments apply to your Savage model, but it sounds like pouring a lot of money into a not so great foundation platform. I’d hold out for something better as a basis like a CZ 550 action or a win70. Feed and function might be a real problem along with some of the observations above on the savage/remage platforms.

the only reason I was eyeing the savage impulse was because the bolt could be switched to south paw and the straight pull. it's a shame to see so many things muking up in the rifle for big cartridges. I think I'll get a rifle custom built from scratch or save up for a blaser r8 then thank you for the input
