Hello Everyone… This may be a tough one but I have a Zastava / Interarms Action with Charles Daly stamped on it but I can’t use the original stock. I’m weird, right handed but shoot left. This stock has a super high comb and its sharp edge rubs my cheek. I really like these actions and would like to find a nice wood stock to replace it. If not I’ll probably have to move the rifle. I like the Mark X stocks or something similar. Anyway… Thought I’d check to see what might be laying in someone’s shop. Thanks!!

Can you show us a photo? Sounds like it has the old roll-over style cheek rest. These can be easily and attractively modified to standard Monte Carlo by simply grinding away the roll-over overhang. I suspect your left-hand issues are a big reason why that goofy style went out of vogue fairly quickly. You should be able to shoot a stock like mine comfortably.

Are you shooting it with scope or irons?

Two potential issues buying a used stock for your rifle. 1) The angle of bolt handle on your action doesn't match what's been carved into the stock. 2) The barrel trough may be cut for a different profile barrel. If trough is too narrow, not a big deal. Just open it up. But cut too wide might leave an unsightly gap. Both issues can be fixed by modifying the stock but might not be as attractive as fixing what you have.

Also, your bottom metal might not match up perfectly to another used stock.

Ask me how I know? The above stock was bought used off GB and I had to deal with all three issues. Fortunately, I was able to make modifications fairly cleanly (the bolt handle was most problematic). Another unforseen issue that was probably unique, this stock had a much thinner pistol grip. To accommodate required shortening the rear action screw, trimming a tiny bit from top of magazine box, and reshaping the trigger shoe.

Moral of the story: I think you would be lucky to buy a used stock and have your action just drop into it.

Thanks everyone for the help! I wondered about the bottom metal but didn’t think about the bolt handle possible issues. I’ll work on pictures of it later this evening.

My rifle is Right handed. That stock on GB is similar to what I’d want but it’s a little dinged up for what I’d “like” to have.

At the top of the stock / comb on my rifle is a straight line, not rolled like most. So it digs in. Haha!

Sounds like the problem is not the comb. I don't have a problem shooting the above 404J. It doesn't dig into my cheek. How tall are you? What is the length of pull (measured from top of trigger to butt of stock). I'm thinking the stock may be too short for you.

There is an Italian company that makes a plastic and fiberglass resin stock (think Glock lower frame), the company is called Sabatti.

The stock is a thumbhole. See if there is a left hand version.

I'm not clear from your post whether your rifle itself is a left handed action, but here is an Interarms Mark X stock (right handed) that Joe Salter is auctioning on GB (ending later today). The listing doesn't specify, but it looks like a long action to me.

That GB used stock is set up for trigger block type side safety. Also, a chunk of wood is missing behind the tang. No photo shows anything behind that damage. Wrist cracked? Appears to also have a chunk of wood missing inside the stock behind the magazine well.

I shoot right handed bolt guns left handed, have had this issue on several guns, have solved it fairly easily by sanding down the sharp edge, rollover….., pretty simple to do, and pretty easy to make it look fine by matching stain /finish, have done a couple lately actually

Cameron Hatcher does semi finished stocks for Zastavas.

He's a member here @HRS.

He ships globally.

Greetings,
Go on to the Boyds Gun Stocks site. They have an Option for "Charles Daly" rifle stock - Mauser Mark X.
Good thing with Boyds you can "customise" your stock...

I have had a couple of left hand stocks for a right hand action made by Richards Microfit.

Here's a photo of Tony receiving that Shaw & Hunter award at the 1970 annual EAPHA Dinner Dance. Tony Dyer, then EAPHA President and Princess (Sunny) von Auersperg presented it. I also attended the event.

Good Afternoon,
How firm are you on your Dakota 416? I am highly interested but looking at a few different guns currently.

Best,
BJ

What is the minimum you would take.
