The Leupold VX-5HD riflescope series offers enhanced optical performance by incorporating Leupold's Twilight Max and High-Definition technologies, enhancing low-light performance and clarity, respectively. Both of these features are relevant to hunters who are after crepuscular game. The Guard-ion Lens Coating protects the lenses against water, dirt, and fingerprints.

The VX-H5D series is made in the USA and features Leupold's Lifetime Guarantee.

Certain VX-5HD models feature the new Custom Dial System ZeroLock2, which prevents the elevation knob from being accidentally moved off of 'zero'; upon disengaging the feature (with the press of a button), the elevation knob can be rotated up to two rotations, with an indication to the user that they are on the second revolution. Scopes featuring this "CDS-ZL2" technology include a custom ballistic dial, free.

Additional options on some models is the incorporation of an illuminated reticle, featuring 1-button intensity adjustment.

Options on VX-HD5 scopes include Alumina Lens Flipback Covers, and the Throw Lever.
