Hi everyone,
I have a question around the legality of taking your own rifle to hunt in South Africa if you’re not going to be using an outfitter.

I assume that if you’re using an outfitter there would be some permits/forms that you’d need to fill out and that the outfitter would take care of or at least tell you what you need to do before you arrive.

I will be hunting on my relatives land and while I could just use his rifle, I’d much rather take my own, but I don’t know if that’s legal to do in the first place?

Let say I was going to stay for two weeks, one week of hunting and the other week we won’t be hunting would that be a problem?

I’d obviously put the rifle in his safe while I’m not hunting, so I wouldn’t be driving around with it all over the country.

I’m a dual citizen and will be travelling on my RSA passport, not sure if that matters ?

Thanks in advance

Contact Henry at RiflePermits.com, a sponsor here on AH, he will be able to answer all your questions about doing this type of import

If you use one of the travel agencies that specialize in hunting to purchase your tickets (Travel Express, or Gracy Travel), they will help you with everything involving firearms.

Recommend you google RSA gun requirements to import a gun to hunt on private property. RSA requires a letter of justification from whomever you'll be hunting with to submit with your SAP 50 form. It may be different with visiting family.

Having a professional advocate at the police precinct at the Johnsonburg Airport can really help your situation.

If you have family that can do it, fantastic.

If not, buy airline tickets through Travel Express or Gracey.

(The last time I was there, some American hunter was getting belligerent with the police at the airport. My concierge, tuned to me and said, "He won't be hunting with his rifles on this trip.")

You will need an invitation letter from whomever you are hunting with. Riflepermits.com
will answer your questions.

Had an excellent classifieds transaction with JoninCO. A truly honest and standup member. I wouldn't hesitate at all to deal with him again. Thanks, J!

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx
