Going to SA in April. In my research most have never mentioned them but others have talked about how important they are. I'm talking about sock savers, also seen them called Omni gaiters. I'll be wearing pants, not shorts. Thanks!

I was there last September and didn't want to buy new ankle cut boots since I hunt in tall boot so I wore low cut waterproof hiking shoes. I got the gaiters that go with running shoes hook to laces and back of shoe. I used them for eight days of a lot of walking and had no problems. They cost less than $20. In our hunting stores the next step was snake proof that went up to the knee?

Can you live without them with pants? Yes.

Are they worthless even when you have pants on? No.

Especially if you have low top shoes. or something that doesn't fit tightly. If I don't blouse my pants I've gotten to where I wear gaiters here in the states even.

I did ware long pants all but the first day since I had legs that were scratch up from the thorns. I think you still want them to stop things from getting into your shoes. I wore low cut sock with thin socks to get two layers had no problems with them the whole time and it was starting to get hot.

I would recommend wearing gaiters with or without long pants. Stopping to empty out your boots is no fun, and that burr will dig in at exactly the wrong time.

Bhfs et al, do you have a link or more info on the gaiters you refer to? The ones I've found are much more than $20. Thanks!

Hi Jasper99
They are by Outdoor Research or OR here is a picture of one still had burr in it. They are called Sparkplug Gaiters

These are the gaiters I wore while in South Africa. Can't remember what hide they are made from, but simple and very effective.

My PH didn't wear them others did, personal preference. I sprayed my socks, pants and camo coverups with permethrin for the ticks.

Been watching for them....they were finally showing in-stock!

Tried to buy two pair....only had one pair left! Poor Kathy will have her boots full of junk! :ROFLMAO:

Nancy doesn't have hers either!!!! :A Tease:

I don't think I've ever seen them out of stock until now. Best money I spent on safarigear!

I don't find them necessary with long pants, I don't wear 'em hear either........

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.
