Curious - has anyone shot both the early RSM that had the front swivel through the stock vs. the later models that had the barrel band? Was there a difference in balance?

I have the last version and bought it specifically because of what I was told about balance. There were three versions of the RSMs - the first with the front swivel in the stock, gen 2 with the banded front swivel but with the heavy barrel of gen 1 and gen 3 with the banded swivel and a thinner barrel profile (but by no means thin!). All of my research told me that, for the 416, the best balanced were the gen 3 rifles. However, I have never handled examples of gen 1 or gen 2. I can only say that I am pleased with mine.

Most of my hunts are solo — just me, my rifle, and a good map. Sometimes I tag along with an old buddy for a week in Zimbabwe or South Africa, but more often than not, it’s just me.
Big fan of classic hunting — bolt-action rifles, old-school tracking, and taking the time to really be in the moment.
Just did a podcast, check it out if interested!
