Hello all,

I recently acquired a Ruger no 1 in 30-06 and need some recommendations for optics and scoping solutions. As the rifle sits I have picatinny bases on it but the rifle also has standard Ruger rings. I know Ruger makes offset rings if anyone happens to know the part number or after market manufactures for them I would be greatly appreciative of that information. If any one can let me know what set up you are running on a No.1 so i can get an idea, as I can already tell eye relief will be a problem. My current idea includes getting a set of offset rings and a Leupold scope as they tend to have better eye relief than other brands. I don't know if I want a standard scope with a 40mm objective or an LPVO. If you could add pictures of your No. 1's I'd love to see them.

300 H&H with Swarovski Z5i, plenty of scope body for a No.1 with QD Alaska Arms rings.

I had the same question not long ago.

+1 for Alaska Arms QD.

Long eye relief is the key. I have two No 1’s. They are scoped as follows:

.275 Rigby
Swarovski Z6 1-6x24 EE
Warne QD rings

.22 Hornet
Zeiss conquest 3-9x40
Leupold rings, rear ring offset

These are the two best scope and mounting options I have seen for a No1. Unfortunately, both scopes are discontinued. They can be found used, but you will pay a premium for them.

I’ve got a .30-06 No.1, and am putting my Maven RA.2 on it … 2-10x38 and only 12 oz … low profile, simple scope for a low-profile, simple rifle …

The Ruger rings you are looking for can be found on amazon. This was the cheapest place I could find them. Mod $30’s shipped free. You may have to order two depending on scope. I am mounting a leupold 2.5-8 and to get eye relief I wanted I needed two rings. The leupold 2.5-8 has a very short tube. I had a 3.5-10 with 30mm and it would work good enough with the leupold rings, but scope looks off due to bigger size. I have the newer #1 in 275 Rigby, so it’s very small side

I had thought I saw something similar but I couldn’t find it. Thank you!

Leupold 1-4x28 Extended Eye Relief in standard Ruger 1” rings on 416 Rigby. 1” tube looks in form with the No.1 and 28mm objective bell allows lower scope mounting and clearing the Quarter rib.

I am using a Zeiss v4 4-16x44 on a 25.06 and love it!

If you want to have the scope forward of the action, Are the scopes that were made for "scout" rifles still in production or has that fad passed?

I didn't feel the need to make any changes to my Ruger #1A. Mounted a Swarovski Z3 3-9x36. It has sufficient eye relief and is light and compact enough to not disrupt the shotgun-like balance and handling of the Ruger #1. Though the 3-9x36 is no longer manufactured, the 3-10x42 Z3 would still be a nice fit. The Z3's are thin tubed and not the most rugged. They have very good glass and are lightweight.

I have access to a #1 6mm Remington topped with a 2.5-10 trijicon
I am really impressed with the trijicon brand right now

Never even seen a trijicon in person. I might get one so I can see what’s up with them.

I went that route thinking it would be a simple solution. Bought a used Burris 2-7 scout scope. Great scope, wrong application. Turns out, too much eye relief is as much a problem as too little.

I have had a dozen or more Ruger No.1’s over the years. I have never had a need for offset scope rings. Never seen a need for any thing other than a Ruger ring set, unless you want QD rings.
Dump the picatinny rail. Why have an added failure point?
If you set the Ruger scope rings up right they are repeatable when removed.
If you feel like you have to QD rings then go with a set of Alaskan Arms.
Eye relief is subjective to the individual.
I have used Leupold, Triqicon and Nikon scopes with great success on Ruger No.1’s
WAB and Bullthrower have the right idea, use a scope with enough body.
