Recommendations for a range revolver in .38 Special

Maybe you consider just getting another 686? Like a custom tuned competition model :D Then use use 38spl in it and keep the other for 357. Or switch it up and use this for 357. The possibilities are endless (or at least two).

Nothing this fancy for certain. Spent some range time with a family member after work today and the 686 no dash had a few rounds through it. I like this new to me revolver. Trigger in single action is very crisp.

Now revolvers are one of my passions. Only S&W.

I would certainly get a S&W K-frame with adjustable sights.
Either a Target Masterpiece (Model 14) in 6" or a Combat Masterpiece (Model 15 or 67) with a 4" barrel.

Other options are heavy barrel Model 10 or 64. (Blue or Stainless)

I would say the perfect 38 revolver is my Model 67 Stainless Combat Masterpiece.

No need to shoot magnums at the range, even for serious social problems a +P .38 will do the trick.

Just by the way, people saying that Taurus are old S&W revolvers have never opened both of these up and had a look.

They are very different mechanically, the only thing they have in common is clockwise cylinder rotation and that they are 6 shot revolvers.

I wont slam a Taurus but they are not S&W's.

My latest revolver is a Taurus 85 in Stainless, I'm going to put pink Hogue grips on it and troll my other S&W friends at our local pocket gun matches when I beat them with it.

If your are not stuck on new... look for a S&W model 66. Stainless .357mag that you can shoot .38 spl in as well.

S&W model 15.... incredibly accurate, easy to holster also, if you want to go that route!

S&W Mod 14, aka K38 Masterpiece.

Used one in competition over decades.

The Manurhin is probably a better gun, but unless you compete at the very top level, you will never notice the difference, and you will save a lot of money.

And no , a 686 is not a different profile Model 19.

The K frame has the same grip dimensions of the L frame but the L is beefed up in many areas to handle 357 magnum. Look at the forcing cone as a dead giveaway, the K frame has flat cut on the bottom to allow the crane to fit the compact dimensions, the L frame is solid in this point. This is the area people have seen cracks in when shooting lots of 357. This is to shoot 357 with no worries.

A K frame will shoot a lieftime supply of 38's so stick with a 10/14/15/64/67 ; get an 80's era one and enjoy the heydays of US Revolver manufacturing.

Well, chatted with our AH master enabler @Mark Biggerstaff of @R&M FIREARMS today and it appears I'll shortly be the owner of a very nice S&W Model 67-1 revolver. Thanks for everyone's opinions and comments on this thread. Mark tempted me with a Model 17 also, but I have 2022 taxidermy being done and finished 2023 taxidermy that should be shipping from SA shortly.

Pleasure as always Ron! Call anytime.

An excellent choice, with the bonus of an adjustable rear sight. Let us know how it shoots.

Excellent name you have there,
Excellent revolver too.

Ron.

Treat yourself to a Korth and get separate cylinders for your .357, .38, and 9mm desires.

I realize how hard the bug has bit. I’m on the cusp of safari #2 and I’m looking to plan #3 with my 11 year old a year from now while looking at my work schedule for overtime and computing the math of how many shifts are needed….
