All my rifles are original Oberndorf Mausers, As and Bs, even my 'London Best' rifles in my collection of some 27+ rifles are built on 'rescued' Oberndorf actions... two of my rifle are from the first year of Oberdorf 98 action productions... in the first year of the Oberdorf factory there was only 900 actions made... two of those are in my collection... Ironically many people ask me do I love my double square bridge actions... my reply 'No I don't' is my reply and then the obvious next question follows 'but why' my answer 'because I do not own one and I've got very little desire too as well' next question 'BUT WHY ?!' the answer is simple 'because the double square bridge was a development in a era 1940's ish when 1. Africa was conquired and the era of large game hunting in the true African context was already over so they have little significance in African history and like wise in the Afrikaans / Dutch / German history of 'settlers and Boers/farmers (I'm orignally from Potchefstroom in the old Western Travl) and secondly because the doubel square bridge was developed almost exlusively to cater for scoped rifles as this was the era when rifle scopes were being developed in larger scale eg Pecar scopes... My collection stops at single bridge Mauser actions but by far my most beloved Mausers are the turn of the century actions 1898 -1920s.. this was the era of open flip up sights and hunting in the true sense of the word 200m and in ... beyond that the flag flip up sight covers the animal and you can just as well close your eyes and pull the trigger... I'm tired of all the BS flying around about this and that 600 yard shot and the skill and bla bla thats being pushed and sold as 'long range hunting' ... really ?? you want to tell me there is more skill involved in that than the Bushmen hunting Oryx in the desert with a bow and arrow at 25 meters ? or being able to take a well placed shot with open sights at 80-120 or so meters ?? What planet are you living on ? at 400yards, - 375 m a deers eyesight is so bad he cant distinghwish between you and a London red bus ... its all Bull**it and its our genenration that let the young wet behind the ears lot get away with it ! If I made the laws the first law would be ban any scope over 12x for hunting... if you can't get close and use the right bullet go play golf .... these are animals entrusted to us which we should respect the idea of throwing lead at them from the next post code is garbadge and should be outlawed .... getting back to building a classic bolt action rifle in large calibre for the big 5 ... 1. Controlled feed action - ONLY 2. Mauser action (its the original and the GOAT no argument) 3. Ex military action made in the 20s,30s, 40s all good afterall we built .505 Gibbs on them so they'll handle any thing with a case capacity of less than 190grs easily, your shoulder won't ! (and yes there is other good controlled feed actions around but all of those DNA is 85% Mauser anyway)... the golden rule with these actions you use them as they were made... in a industial factory... no bs engravings and the cardinal sin breaking up numbers mantching actions, bottom metal, screws, triggers etc unless they are unsafe, and even then you keep the originals safe... you can swap all that as much as you like on a remington, winchester mod 70 (which was a Mauser rippoff anyway from the 1930s) etc but you do that to a orignal Mauser action and I catch you, make damn sure you have a good Sanlam policy your wifes going to need it !... anyway runt over ... bottom line be respectful and true to yourself and remembers you do not own these classic rifles you merely priviladged to spend some time of your life in their presence !
