P14 DG rifles

All of the speed shooting I have seen and was complained about during the first world war, was due to the speed the SMLE Enfields (?) were capable of producing with trained soldiers.
The bolt could be held between the thumb and first (pointer) finger without letting go to fire. The trigger was pulled by the second (Saturday night) finger.
If you google SMLE 10 shots in 6 seconds, you'll come up with a video on it. The lad needs more practice, but did this.
I suspect both the P14 and model 1917 would work similarly.
I'm sure I could shoot my Springfield even faster with that method ... if I was nuts. Range safety officer would have a stroke!

Much depends on the relationship between the bold knob and the trigger. A Mauser-type (bent or scoped) bolt might drop down too far and not allow the middle finger's access to the trigger.
I tried this on my #4 and it worked well, chambered for the .312 Express. I thought I had invented that one, but then found Ken Waters had done the same thing a couple years earlier.
174gr. @ 2,960fps.

@Ontario Hunter
The Americans put the grand up against the No1Mk111 SMLE in a speed and accuracy test for ten shots.
Sad to say the grand lost in both speed and accuracy
Both rifles started with empty mags and had to be loaded and fired. By the time the grand had loaded the 2nd enbloc clip the SMLE had fired it's 10 shots.

Looking to chat to anyone who has built a big bore on a P14 action
Thanks
Ian
I used a Cogswell & Harrison .404 Jeffery (which was built on a Pattern 14 Enfield action) to hunt a hippopotamus bull on land.

At one time, even Holland & Holland (from 1918-1957) offered magazine rifles built upon the Pattern 14 Enfield action.

These were very strong Magnum length actions, thoroughly to be relied upon. They can be used to build rifles as large as the .505 Gibbs without a problem.

My local buddy has a model 1917 in 8x68S and 6.5x68 on a P14. He also has,a .303 P14 with a new barrel in .308 he had me chamber to .303 so he could load 220gr. Hornadys. Turned out to be a tack driver with 150gr. Interbonds at 2,700fps. Worked on a bull moose, 6pt Elk, mule and whitetail buck on fall. He has hungry kids, still.

Picking a 10 shot contest and competing with an 8 shot self-loader is a disadvantage. Make it a 16 shot contest and see which is faster.
@Ray B
Either way both were faster than the mausers.
SMLE 10 rounds then reload
Garand 8 rounds
Mauser 5 rounds

@Ray B
Isn't the 8mm REM mag just a modified 375 case any hoo.
Sounds like he just re invented the 375 wheel.
Bob

From what I remember Bob the 8mm Rem Mag had a much stronger case for higher pressures & I suppose was also Improved case !

But yes a slightly better/improved wheel, not really needed & more issues than it solves !

@VSOHunt Roy Dunlap's book 'Gunsmithing' is worth reading on this subject. He went to a great deal of trouble to detail the right and wrong--unsafe--ways to modify the breech-bolts on these rifles.

I probably should finish my P14 project.
A P14 BSA sporter (rear sight gone and d/t'd for scope bases with a 308 target barrel, some P17 magazine bits etc. Timney and Canjar trigger although the cancer is more if a target type. Need a proper stock.
Would like to make it a 300HH but readers are like unicorn shit here in NZ.
Would have to buy and import a reamer ex US and the dollar hasn't been friendly for a while and definitely not at present.
I did find some dies and maybe 40 cases recently so that's one step closer
Din Collings most probably had a reamer for the .300 H&H. Ask Mike or Ross Collings which one of them ended up with it.

Sarg, the standard .375 H&H Case was necked down and blown out. 65,000PSI SAAMI max working pressure.
Same pressure as the 6MM Rem., .270 Winchester, some other standard and shorter cases and most of the belted magnums.
My buddy Keith had an 8mm Rem. Mag. for a while. He preferred his 8x68S.
IIRC, the 8x68S SAAMI or CIP was 68,000. I made my 9.5x68 magnum brass from .375 brass.
Great ballistics.

Jerome, do you think my last post in rough camping must maybe shift as an article?

Good afternoon,

I'm trying to get in contact with Mr Butch Searcy. I have the opportunity to buy one of his rifles chambered in 577 nitro Express however the seller does not have any of the paperwork with the information about what ammunition or bullet weight was used to regulate it. I know he is not making firearms anymore but I wanted to reach out after seeing one of your post about him.

Hi - the only (best) method of sending you the .375/06IMP data is with photographing my book notes. My camera died so the only way I can do it is with my phone. To do that, I would need your e-mail address, as this
new Android phone is too complicated to upload to my desk computer, which would be easier and to down-grade, reduce the file sizes.
Best wishes
Daryl
