Disclaimer: Below data proved safe in my Ruger No. 1 rifle. Always follow safe handloading procedures which includes starting min. 10% below maximum loads and work up. Any component substitutions also require one to start low and work up.

Some of the loads below SHOULD NOT BE USED IN DOUBLE RIFLES! I will point those loads out with a WARNING.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Periodically folks will be looking for some data to give indications of where to go with regard to loading for the 450-400 NE.

There seems to be a lack of data out there, especially with the 300gr bullets, so I thought I'd share some data from my Dope Book.

All loads below are using Hornady brass and Federal 215 primers. Velocities are instrumental at 15 feet.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
300gr Barnes TSX (.411")

63gr Velocity 1,999

IMR 4831 OAL 3.65" (temp 85F)
78gr Velocity 2,042
80gr Velocity 2,094
82gr Velocity 2,129
84gr Velocity 2,202
85gr Velocity 2,247 (DO NOT USE IN DOUBLE RIFLE)
86gr Velocity 2,287 (DO NOT USE IN DOUBLE RIFLE)
87gr Velocity 2,319 (DO NOT USE IN DOUBLE RIFLE)
88gr Velocity 2,339 (DO NOT USE IN DOUBLE RIFLE)

400gr Hornady DGS (.410")

Hodgdon H414 with 4 gr Dacron filler. OAL 3.643 (Temp 85F)
71.5gr Velocity 2,089

400gr North Fork (.410")

IMR 4831 OAL 3.793" (Temp 80F)
80gr Velocity 2,092

Sorry I did not record the temps at firing for all loads....but they were all between 60 and 85F.

Please read the above data carefully. I have reviewed several times before posting to make sure I didn't have any typos...but you are responsible for doing a reality check!!

Good shooting!

More data from the Ruger No. 1 450-400. This time with the new-to-me IMR 7977

Please read warnings in post #1 before reading further here. These loads were safe in my rifle. Start low and work up carefully!

Velocities below are instrumental at 15 feet. MV will be a frog's eyelash higher. ;)

400gr Hornady DGX (.410")
IMR 7977
Hornady brass
Fed 215 Primer
COAL 3.75" (my rifle has a long throat. Not crimped in cannelure. I have turned down my expander 0.0005" for tight grip on the bullets)
Temp: 85F

90gr 2,120 fps
91gr 2,152 fps
92gr 2,179 fps (DO NOT USE IN DOUBLE RIFLE)
93gr 2,229 fps (DO NOT USE IN DOUBLE RIFLE)
94gr 2,243 fps (DO NOT USE IN DOUBLE RIFLE)
95gr 2,266 fps (DO NOT USE IN DOUBLE RIFLE)

All cases extracted easily and expansion of the brass was normal at the web area.

If using this case, primer, bullet, powder combo in a double rifle, I would start at 85gr and work up carefully, watching for signs of excess pressure.

Do not hot-rod your double rifle! I strongly recommend the use of a chronograph for all load development, but especially for a double rifle.

Good shooting!
