I sent an old wore out pair of Leupold 9X25 pocket binoculars in to be refurbished that I bought in 1988. The lenses were scratched ( loned them to friend, big mistake) and the hinges were wore out. I had my dealers license back then and I think I paid $180.00 for them. Got an e-mail from Leupold yesterday to call them. They said that they were going to replace them with a pair of 8x42's and I ask them if they could bump that up to a pair of 10x42's. The gentleman said it was not a problem, I said cool and thank you. Never asked what model they were sending me. I figured they were going to send me a pair of $200.00 field glasses which I would have been more than happy with. Then I thought , wonder if I could up-grade for 2 or 3 hundred bucks, that's all I have to work with. Called them back to see if I could up grade and they said sure. I asked how much and he said another $500.00. I about shit, and said, just what are you sending me ? He said a set of BX4 Pro Guide Gen2 10x42's $600.00 retail. To say the least, I am ecstatic. Leupold warranty and customer service is the BEST.

Do I understand this correctly? A worn out pair of binocs was sent back to Leupold and with those and $500 they are going to send a new pair the retails for $600 to you?

I received a VX3 3.5-10x back from the Australian Leupold agent, Nioa, this morning. Everything checked, reset and regassed. More or less brand new condition and it didn't cost me a cent!!
All but 2 scopes I own are VX3's, I buy them whenever I spot a second hand that is reasonably priced. I have 16 fitted to rifles and 5 spares in my safe. The other 2 are Kahles.
Buy the best and cry once!

I believe what he was saying is that he sent in a worn out pair. Leupold said they would replace them and didn't clarify the model. He called back asking If he could upgrade even higher. They said the upgrade would be $500 because they are already sending him a pair worth $600 for free, as the replacement for the worn out ones. That is how I understood what he wrote.

Alright so you paid $180 back in the day, add the $500 you are giving them today. $680 total, and the new pair is worth $600…

some thing don,t add up. i have used their repair service several times over 50 years and was always treated more than fairly.

No. He sent in an old pair, they offered free replacement of Pro Guide. He called see about upgrade to even a better grade. Upgrade was $500. He declined and still gets pro guide for free which is a $600 retail value.

While I understand some confusion from the wording in the original post. I don't understand how people think he feels mad at Leupold and was treated unfairly when he ends the post with: "To say the least, I am ecstatic. Leupold warranty and customer service is the BEST."

That’s fantastic!

I had a similar experience with a Leupold spotting scope last year! Very pleased!

I sent in a pair of 38 year old Leupold 9x25 pocket binoculars that were beat up and wore out. When they told me they were going to send me a replacement pair, I figured they were going to send me a $200.00 pair because I figured that was all the ones I sent in were worth. That is when I called them back and asked if I could upgrade having the Pro Guides in mind. They told me $500.00 to upgrade to the next model which retail at $1,100.00. That is when I asked , just what are you replacing my 9x25's with. That is when he told me they were sending me the Pro Guides. I damn near fell off my chair. Couldn't be happier.
I have nothing but praise for Leupold. I hope this clears things up a little. Then again , maybe not.:)

I'm not sure how Leupold makes their binoculars that they would wear-out in ten years. I have an 8x30 Bausch & Lomb Zephyr made in Rochester in 1949. I've taken them on every hunting trip, vacation and household use since I inherited them from my grandfather in 1964. they still work fine, needing only one re-collimation during that time. Guess things aren't made that way anymore.

They were bought in 1988, that makes them 38 years . They had 2 hinges that flapped in the wind and also needed re-collimated. They said they couldn't repair mine, but did an outstanding job up-grading me. I recieved a shipping notice an hour latter. Can't beat that with a stick, even if you wanted to.
Well, never mind.

Good to hear! :D Beers:

I dropped a pair of 15x56 out of my 18 feet out of my deer stand last fall. It broke off one of the ocular objectives. Sent them in with a description of what happened just to see what they’d do. They sent me a free pair and even covered the shipping. They have definitely earned my future business
