My wife and I will spend 3 days at Estancia Arroyo Verde Lodge fly fishing for trout and land locked salmon before we take the 2 hour drive to Algar for the red stag rut. In addition to stag I will take a look at a Pere David's deer and some of the mountain sheep for 5 days.

This will be the first time I have hunted with a rental gun so I hope that goes well.

I will try to post some pictures along with a hunt report when I get back.

If you have been to Algar please let me know if there is anything I should be on the lookout for.

I hunted with Algar in March two years ago. I used a rental rifle of theirs, it was a Win Model seventy in seven mm rem mag, synthetic stock with stainless barrel. It was a good shooting tack driver so if you see it grab it to use.
Don’t be in a big hurry to shoot a stag, you will see a lot of them. Also, once you get your stag they let you shoot all of the cull stags you want, I took two cull stags that week as well

Here is a picture of my mounted stag from March 2023, measured 419” taken in the free range area.

That is exactly what I will do, great advise.

I hunted with them in 2013. Shot stag and cull. I used their rifle which had double set triggers and wood stock. Seems it was an European make. Accurate with excellent triggers. If you want a Russian boar let them know ahead of time so they can bait a spot. Food and lodging was great.

Also, make sure you tell the owners what you want before you leave the headquarters each morning as the guides do not speak English very well. I had a chance to shoot an average boar, which was fine with me, but the guide was looking for a “grande”. A little miscommunication.

I want MontanaPat’s stag

Thanks for all of the advice.

Are the stalks long?

My guide spotted my stag from a ways away and we drove past it about a half mile or more. He was in the willows in a creek bottom and we went down and across the creek and parked. We did a stalk along the opposite ridge above the creek bottom back towards the stag using the tall tussocks of grass as cover. Took about 45 minutes to get where we thought he was, by himself so not roaring around 10AM. He was down in the creek and could see his antler tips moving above the creek bank as he moved along. He finally came up over the bank and saw us on the hillside but not sure what we were. Shot him at about seventy five yards, went maybe thirty feet and began to wobble and down

I also took a really nice Russian boar with them, weighed about three hundred pounds

I just saw Budsgunshop.com has both the guide gun and the African for $1150. FWIW - I bought both and decided to use the Guide gun - I restocked it in a Bell and Carlson stock and I added the Alaska arms floor plate to add a round. I wanted the shorter barrel as I will use a suppressor. I wont go lower than $1100, but I will ship it and no sales tax.

Let me know if you are interested
