I completely thrashed two pairs of Carhartt pants in Africa on a recent hunt by running through thorny brush. I came home to pulls and holes all over the front legs. Wife says I'm not allowed to wear them "out" anymore. Looking for something lightweight to take their place and short of making another trip to RSA to visit the Jonnson outlet in Pretoria, the KUIU PRO Brush Pant. Wondering if anyone has any experience with them or something similar.

I've also seen the Beretta Thorn Resistant EVO Pants on the internet if anyone has input on these.

I don’t have experience with any of the pants you listed but these are the pants I wear (in green) for any African hunt. I only had one pair for Cameroon after my luggage didn’t arrive. They lasted the 12 days plus the hunts before and one or two after if that says anything.

Sorry I do not have experience with the Pro Brush Pant. However, I do have experience with the Kuiu attack pant on my hunt in South Africa in June. Worked great for me and recommend them.

I’ve got some Orvis trousers for bird hunting that I bought a long time ago. I don’t wear them that much anymore as I’ve instead used some Filson thornproof chaps that slip on over regular pants. A buddy has some super light chaps that are snake proof, too. Highly recommend adding this bit of kit to gear closet.

I have 4 pairs of Pro Brush pants, and they are absolutely amazing!

2 pairs have gone through one hunting season and the other two are new.

The vents in them are great. I have not ripped, torn or damaged them, and that includes hunting in areas with thick bush and thorns.

I honestly believe that it is money well spent. I highly doubt that you will be disappointed should you decide to get a pair.

I have Filson double front hunting pants that I use for cold weather tree work. They are good, but extremely heavy and not good for use in temps above 50F. Even the heavyweight Carhartt (10 oz and heavier) I find too warm for temps down to 30F when I'm doing active stalking and walking. Most brush pants (Orvis, Cabela's, chaps...etc) I've found are too heavy in weight and too warm. Looking for a lightweight option.

Awesome. How did you like the fit compared to what you would normally order? What temperature range did you find them most comfortable with no baselayer?

Best I ever found were mountain khaki brush pants. They are not made anymore but I have found them on eBay in the past (new)

The fit perfectly from what I normally wear. I was hunting all day today in a pair, with temperatures from 57F to 72F. The vents rally worked well in keeping me cool.

I wear them comfortably in temperatures down to 41F without feeling the need for a base layer.

That’s what I’m looking for. Appreciate the input.

Haven’t worn those particular ones but Kuiu kutanas are great. Very durable and lighter weight with hip vents. Great in warm weather.

I wore Kuiu on a safafri to SA several years back. 7 days in the bush nothing out of the normal just the usual thorns and brush in Limpopo. The pants got absoluteley trashed, ripped, torn, holes from thorns. When I got home I sent them back to Kuiu for a warranty claim, they denied my claim saying that I abused them and they don't cover abuse. I have since switched to Badlands gear, specifically the Fortis pants. I have worn them on 3 safari's now with absolutely no sign of wear. Bonus is that they come in plain khaki and grey so you can wear them for travel without standing out in camo. Unconditional lifetime guarantee is a big bonus. To me Kuiu is over priced for the quality you get.

@30-06Ken - What temperatures were you comfortable wearing the Badlands Fortis?

I’m going to SCI in ‘26 so I’ll try to lay eyes on these before making a decision.

EDIT - Checked online and they are out of almost all sizes in the chocolate color. Not a fan of black and the dune (light khaki) color is too light for the hunting I do. But I’ll still keep an eye out.

Which model Kuiu pant? My guess is, you wore attacks which are less durable but soft and warmer.

I have worn them in temps from the mid 40's Farenheit to low 80's and been very comfortable. They breathe well when you are walking. I wouldn't wear them sitting on stand all day when its 40 without a merino wool underlayer though.

I have a couple pairs of the KUIU Tiburon trousers and really like them for warm weather hunting. However their resistance to briars and thorns is nearly zero. Extremely thin but I've not had any problems in non-briar country. Would NOT be a good choice for Africa IMO.

Have a couple pairs of Kuiu brush pants. I love them and they are holding up just fine in the thickets.
If you go that route gimme a ring as im going to be placing an order down the road.

I’ve been through a number of different brush pants, including Kuiu. The most durable or brush resistant I’ve found is the First Lite Sawbuck brush pant. It’s not quiet, but it keeps the thorns out better than anything else and holds up.

They are stout. But no side vent is almost a deal breaker for me.
