Son stopped by the local gunshow today. As so often happens I was depressed by what’s on display. Lots of tacticool and not much interesting to me—but that’s a different topic

I did see one thing that piqued my interest. A guy there has a new business 3D printing shell holders. He specializes in holders that fit in the Milwaukee pack out system which was pretty neat if your a competition shooter or for taking lots of guns and ammo to the range.

But what was really interesting is he can make custom holders that ft any caliber and in any kind of case. For instance he could make a shell holder that fits in one of the smaller pelicans that holds a specific caliber or couple of calibers.

My question is do you think this would qukify for the airlines. I know they say most be in the manufacturers box or similar this would essentially turn the pelican into something similar to a manufacturers box itself. If the airlines would allow it I think it would be a very efficient way to travel.

And the prices were great. For one of his standard units was like $40. He said it would be a few bucks to design something he didn’t already make. He hasn’t done any .375 H&H for instance but said if I give him a round he can scan it and make basically anything I want.

I’m attaching a couple pictures so you can see what I mean. Basically he can do for ammo what the GunFoam guys are doing for gun cases. His business is very new but he said he’ll have a website up soon. I have his contact info if anyone wants it.

If enough people were interested in a safari setup we could probably share out his design fee.

What do you think it would add in terms of weight? And would he do a "split" setup? If someone took multiple calibers?

The holder is extremely light I don’t think it adds any weight at all. He did say he would do a split setup so you could have rounds for your PG rifle and DG rifle in the same case as many or few of each as you choose.

Most people pack ammo in the factory box or a 20-round plastic container that is then placed in some sort of case for travel. We happen to use a Pelican 1200 that can hold about 60 rounds of 375H&H in this way and still be under 5 kilos (11 lbs) with locks.

Once on safari, the Pelican 1200 stays with the luggage while the 20-round container is put into a day pack as a backup supply. I wouldn't want to carry the full sized hard case in the day pack and I certainly don't want to shove loose ammo into a pocket.

Some people choose to leave nearly all their ammo in camp and head out for the day with cartridge slides or a cartridge belt. In that case, I could see it getting some use. It looks like 100 of 6.5CM. How many 375H&H cartridges do you think he could fit into a Pelican 1200? I suppose the 375H&H would work for all cartridges based on that design, which might be a good thing.

It's an excellent idea, but might be hit or miss with the safari crowd.

I was having that same thought after I noodled on it a bit. Last year just put 2 or 3 of those 20-round green plastic boxes and then threw in some socks to keep them from banging around in the Pelican. Having something to throw in the day pack was handy. Next year I'll have a fancy Murray leather item on my belt because it's so much more stylish than a green box. :)

I hate the shape of factory ammo boxes and those plastic carriers so I alway transfer my ammo to a combo of slides and other carriers in my pack or on my person but I can see how others do it differently.

Here is a pic of what he can do for a handgun carrier to go to the range. Pretty neat in my mind.

Sir, I will gladly take that 16 gauge off your hands. I was waiting for your Winchesters but I'm a sucker for a 16 ga.

I bought a great deal of the brass he had for sale, plus I already had many hundred rounds.

How much brass are you looking for?
