I tawt I taw a puddy tat!

Thanks, I have heard the same. I saved some back strap so Ill let you know after I try it. 36% of our cats here carry Trichinosis and 84% in Southern AB so you definitely need to make sure to thoroughly cook it.

I totally agree with you on how far to cook a predator before eating same.
Where I was born and raised (The Soviet Socialist People's Republic of California), the pumas often carried a specific species of tape worm, as well as other diseases, according to the local Game Wardens.
I never new anyone to eat the meat from them back in those days (I defected almost 33 years ago) but, no doubt thorough cooking would have been wise like you mentioned.
We did eat black bear there (actually somewhat common for more than just a few bears to be taken in Calif each fall) and it was common knowledge that at least Trichinosis was rampant in them so, you just did not take a chance on undercooking bear meat.
The chap I mentioned who eats Lynx claims it is one of the best stew meats on the planet, wild or domestic of any species we'd care to name.
Perhaps one day I will be down his way (he moved about 150 miles from where I still live) when kitty stew is simmering in the kettle there, and then I can write something up on it here.
Meanwhile, I look forward to your report on how the Mt. Lion meat fared, one of these days.
Out.

AWESOME. well worth the wait. Forrest

Has anyone here tried the meat from one of these "Northern Panthers" ?

I have eaten many times our Southern ones Velo Dog and let me tell you, is a delicate and exquisite meat....allways when some friend, neighbor or myself, get one, We share the meat and eat them, wich happens 3 o 4 times a year.....!!!!!

Velo Dog,
I would walk past a fat elk steak for a lion chop! My first wife wouldn't eat any game meat and wouldn't hear of eating mt lion. I took a very nice cat one year and my Mom cooked some up with a bed of wild rice. My wife raved about how delicious the pork was and had a second helping. We finally told her what it was and she said she didn't care because it was so good. Lol. I always took all of the meat I could pack out with me.

Hola ROCKET,

Tambien, that is what I have read, excellent flavor.
Maybe there will be carne de puma on el menu if I can ever get down to your beautiful country !
If no pumas are in your freezer, we will enjoy los chorizos del oinker (con copas de malbec).

Salud,
Velo Dog.

Bullthrower338,

If you will pass up elk for lion, that's all you have to say.

I am fortunate enough to eat elk every year but have never had Mt. lion.

Hopefully some day I will get the chance to try it.

That's a good one on your exwife.

It must be very exhausting for people like her to go through life all squeamish about something as basic and wonderful as food.

Cheerio,
Velo Dog.

I haven taken two mature toms and the meat was excellent, light colored and mild flavor.

I had mtn lion to eat about 20 years ago.Had no idea what I was eating at the time. The outfitters wife ask if I like dinner or not.I said that was really good and the meat was great.I got the yeah mtn lion taste better then what must people think it does.I was shocked and said I thought it was some kind of pork.
I would eat it again for sure.

Ya I couldn't just walk away from the carcass without at least taking enough meat to try. I believe my words were "I can always spit it out" lol

Diamondhitch,
You will be pissed you left the rest on the mountain! By the way, very fine cat that you took. I miss the sound of the blue ticks, especially when they are treed! That feeling that you get after an exhausting chase, to hear that distinguished sound that all you have to do is get to the tree because the dogs have done a fine job for you. Most never get a chance to experience what we do as hunters, and for that I am sorry for the poor basturds!
Cheers,
Cody

Congrats on an excellent trophy! It's still on my bucket list!

Great story, wonderful cat. Thanks for sharing, enjoyed it... Would love to do that hunt with my Grandfather's 32 Winchester Special model 94.

Hey Diamondhitch, you just gave me another goal to go after!

What a great cat!

Great cat and a great hunt, congratulations. I'm looking to do a mountain lion hunt in the next few years, most likely in Arizona so my wife can visit her family while I'm out hunting!

That would be perfect. The gun was what originally inspired the hunt. It has done it all, it has killed a grizzly, driven off intruders and fed my great grandfather on his many trips running horses from Montana up to Grande Prairie. It has so much character and history and even a mar across the stock from vibrating on the seat of the old model T ford. I just really wanted to be a part of and carry on the tradition with that gun.

Its what I do, inspire hunters and PO their wives :)

Thanks, a dry ground cat hunt would be really neat for sure. Good luck and smart play with the wife.

Novel idea! My better half has an aunt out there....might be a bargaining point.
