I need some of your wisdom on a 6.5 Swede sporter!

several swedish model 96 and 38 rifles and a cz 550 in 6.5x55 and my favorite 6.5 caliber rifle, a remington 700 sps with a 24" barrel with a 1-8 twist in .260.

My favorite Swede has to be my sweet shooting Sauer 202. Absolutely love the action, accuracy, balance, and the option to change calibers, BUT they are hard to find anywhere near that price. I would second the recommendation of Husqvarna 1900! *Insert Chef's Kiss*

1896 Swedish Mausers in 6.5 X 55 are truly a marvelous firearm. I own about a dozen of them. WHY, they are damned accurate. My latest acquisition was sporterized by a previous owner. It had a modern stock the bolt was already bent, drilled and tapped for a scope with a Timney trigger. It turned out to be one of the first 40K that were made. Those rifles were actually produced in Mauser's factory in Obendorf, Germany. I used this rifle on my last African hunt. Prior to leaving I fired a six-shot group into less than an inch using Norma factory ammo loaded with 156 Grain Orex bullets. I found this rifle (sans scope) in a local gun shop for $400.00. You just need to be patient but ready to purchase these beauties when they become available.

I would stay clear of the Swede's built on pre-m98 actions (they are beautifully machined and strong and all that; but a failed case means your face and eye will be sprayed with debris. Thrust me, I have seen it happen and the shooter wasn't happy to get to know the eyedoctor really good...). Some of them are downright dangerous (example Stiga marked ones in 30-06 and 9,3x62; magazine opening extended by simply machining away material behind the locking lug, and many of them built on factory 2nds actions..).
The ones built on m98-actions are an excellent choice! FN made actions, Swedish barrels and finish.
1600/1640; this are nice rifles, well built and finished; but spares do not exist (they share close to no parts with m98 and m94/96/38).
If you can find a Hva/CG model 1900-buy it; it is a fantastic action. Smooth, and really nice! They also exists as "Viking 1900" and "Antonio Zoli 1900".

If I were to buy a 6,5x55 for hunting today I would buy what is probably the most boring rifle ever produced, a Tikka T3x. Cheap(ish), accurate out of the box, available anywhere (here in Scandinavia-I can buy milk, bread, butte, a Tikka T3 and a moderator at the local Co-Op..).
If the purpose was range use the choice would be a Sauer 200STR/SSG3000.

If one looks at how the 6,5x55 is loaded by Scandinavian target shooters today and how it perform-wow-this is a little magnum! Please do not attempt thoose loads in any old gun..

The Tikkas are also 1:8 twist so can stabilize heavy bullets. Many other are a slower twist rate.

A 140gr Accubond is good for everything up to including Gemsbok.
The heavies kill a lot of Blue wildebeest and bigger every year.

Ok, that has the infamous side slide safety. You have to be very careful with those. I have one and you cannot count the safety. You have to hear the click and not just the safety position.

I've never seen a Ruger African in 6.5!

Theres a couple on guns int. right now . full length Mannlicher stocks, 1 is SS.

Were you aware of the fact that they made the last batch of Swedish Mausers? Husqvarna made the M38 which was a shorter version of the 1896 model. To my knowledge, the last of the Swedes were made in 1944.

I just decided to get both. Why not, right? I did see a very cool M38 on Simpsons, but I was unaware of the history.

Both rifles are Husky. I looked at a Veore, but the Husky was in better shape.

All our Husqvarna came with M98 actions , I am not sure I would 100% trust a m38
To handle a reload, but I am sure factory loads are ok

It looked cool. That's all I know. I know the 98 better than any other Mauser action, and I'm with you.

Those are nice rifles. I remember a nice camp gun at Sango in Save Valley. It was a 223 or 243, I can't remember which but a lovely gun. It would be perfect in 6.5
