I booked my first safari through a friend of a friend who owns a safari outfit in SA. Met the owner in the US twice before I booked the hunt. Great guy, he told me upfront he wouldn't be hunting with me since he would still be in the US visiting sport shows when we went in March. He said he had good people that would take care of us. Our mutual friend vouched for him and we went to SA. The safari owner had his man meet us in J Berg at we had the absolute time of our life for a week.
Our PH was a great guy, the day before we went back to the states the owner returned and joined us. It was a great time.
I have to add this. When we left for our safari it was early March. The owner of our Safari Company just happened to be at a sports show in the city that we were flying out of. We had dinner with him the night before our flight out and he drove us to the airport in Sioux Falls. He stayed at the show and we flew to his home the next day. 5 days later we met him at his home in Limpopo and had dinner again.
I absolutely love the connection between hunters from continents apart. Its great. The hunting community is the best bunch of people in the world.
My PH and his family and friends have an open bunk (several) at my farm house in MN forever.
