I have been told that you cannot bring hand loaded ammo to South Africa. That you must bring only factory boxed ammunition. Is this accurate?

Please advise.

Thank you,

I took all hand loaded ammo to Africa this past summer.
In fact everyone in our group did.
Proper containers and you are fine.
Should be some other posts on this one. test the search function.

good Luck.

You can bring hand loaded ammo into Africa. It just has to be in plastic containers or something similiar so primers are not touching. It doesn't hurt to have the ammo labeled. The ammo should match the caliber of the gun you are bringing into Africa. No more than 11 pounds of ammo too. If in doubt hire a gun service to breeze your way through the gun collection area in Tambo International Airport.

Welcome to Ah.

African questions will be answered here. sometimes you like the answer and sometimes not.

You are in luck of hand loaded ammo. You can bring in ammo that matches your rifle or rifles up to 11 pounds. (slip a box in your pocket and weigh at the grocery store if you do not have a scale)

Boxes, you may use factory ammo or it boxes.
You may use plastic ammo containers. i suggest you place tape to provide a seal so that it does not open. Clear or smoked work well usually and on inspection the inspectors see the ammo and do not open the case.

now some airlines require you to have empty slots filled with something so that the shells can not become lose and move around. (ear plugs work well)

Oh, yeah we all forgot: Maximum number of rounds may not exceed 200 rounds/ rifle/caliber.
Only one rifle of same caliber.
This is for RSA. Not other countries. If you are hunting somewhere else, different rules.

It should also be in a pad locked box like a pelican box or something like that. If you would like I can send you the model no that I used. I took 2 boxes one in my wife's bag, and one in mine. Some input on the number of rounds....you don't need 200. When I go next time the maximum will be 50 per rifle. If you have zeroed everything the most you will use checking it is 10 rounds that leaves 40 left to hunt on and unless you are spending 3 weeks you just don't need it. I took extra .375 as my PH said he could always use some extra rounds.

Lastly spend the money on Gun Import Service. I went in ahead of 10 guys and walked out of there in 5 minutes. My PH said those guys would be there at least an hour. Cost was $105 plus $85 Fed-X charge to ship license. You'll also need to go to US Customs and have your guns inspected and get the form filled out. I did that for every piece of electronic's, camera's we took.

Thanks for the information. This really helps us since we hand load. Please forward (6mm) tthe model number of the Pelican box you use.

Thanks again,

I bought 2 Pelican 1200 Boxes complete with all of the pluckable foam inserts. I only ended up using top and bottom foam but when I got back i set one up for my FN 5.7. On the box size arrange some boxes and then measure them and go check what might work size wise for you. There is a guy in Ohio that has the best prices if you web search you'll find him. I ended up buying some cardboard ammo boxes from Midway (20 Round Size) as they just worked out better for the .06. For the .375 H&H I used MTM Plastic boxes.

FYI I zeroed my rifles perfectly, and the case was unblemished when we unloaded it from the truck. Both rifles were shooting 4" to 6" low in RSA. To funny. You will have a blast and be scheming about how soon you can get back there on the flight home.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
