After using the rented one to take my Cape Buffalo, I decided I wanted my own. I got the Alaskan since I plan to have it customized down the road and the Safari is a bit hard to find. I fired it from the gun store and by god its fun.

Weighs in at 7lbs 8ozs on my simple luggage scale so recoil is a little stout but should do just fine once a scope is mounted. The goal is one rifle safari when my son and I go in a few years. Also want to smoke a whitetail with it this year. I hope to make a big bore shoot this year or next.

Congratulations. The Alaskan is a great rifle and I like it over the Safari in .375 H&H. Which scope are you planning? Mine wore a 2-10 Leupold.

Since I just saw the VX-5HD Ver 2 came out that is a strong contender but I have really had good luck with Trijicons so a 2-10x36 Creedo is on the list too. 19-22 oz to help get the rifle weight up is not a bad idea too.

Cool! I just picked one up myself. Bought a few different loads to see what it likes. Will know more after range session this weekend.

Question; what is the difference between the Alaskan and Safari models? Just cosmetic?
Alaskan is about a pound lighter, lighter profile barrel, sling studs on stock (no barrel band), barrel about an inch longer, and flip up not express sight.

Safari uses the same barrel as .416, and .458 so thicker.

Several years ago I got a Win 70 375H&H. It started me down the big bore road - Points of interest have been 375 Weatherby, 375 RUM. 2 404 Js, 458 Win Mag, 470 NE, & most recently 475 Turnbull. My wife wonders if that road is better than some other options and wonders if I should contact a different travel agent.

Nice start & congrats…but, Big Bores, so I’ve been taught…start with the .4’s.
I started with a .375 H&H M70 Safari, still have it, got proficient with it & moved up to the .4’s. A mentor, finally said…”now you have a Big Bore!”
Whatever, enjoy it & who cares what others say or think.

Congrats on a fine rifle purchase. I have 2 Safari Expresses in 375H&H. One I’ve left as is and the other I have had cerakoted and will put it in a McMillian stock for an all weather type rifle. I have found my wood stocked rifle to be very accurate. Still waiting on the McMillian stock but I’m confident that one will be a shooter as well.

It may be sacrilege to some but the plan for this one is to get it over to a gun smith for the Field Ethos treatment. I still have my CZ 600 lux for classic wood but a 1 world rifle is in the plans and I can always pick up another down the road.

Which McMillan stock did you end up going with? I have a brown bear hunt on Kodiak next year. I recently picked up a new M70 Alaskan in 375 h&h, and it is currently getting a cerakote as well. I’d been looking at the synthetic stock options from Mcmillen, but am getting a bit dizzy with stock and fill options!
